This volume analyzes from a comparative perspective the evolution of cults dedicated to kings and heroes during the Hellenistic period in three major areas of antiquity: Egypt, Western Asia (Mesopotamia and Levant), and Greece. During this period, royal cults in Egypt and Mesopotamia, as well as heroic cults in the Greek world, underwent important transformations which can be linked in part with the emergence and development of a »Hellenistic« culture in the Mediterranean basin.
