This volume analyzes from a comparative perspective the evolution of cults dedicated to kings and heroes during the Hellenistic period in three major areas of antiquity: Egypt, Western Asia (Mesopotamia and Levant), and Greece. During this period, royal cults in Egypt and Mesopotamia, as well as heroic cults in the Greek world, underwent important transformations which can be linked in part with the emergence and development of a »Hellenistic« culture in the Mediterranean basin. 'This volume of the Paléographie hiéroglyphique collection offers a study of the hieroglyphic signs carved on several stelae of the Kushite King Taharqa of the 25th Dynasty. Among these stelae, five are from the site of Kawa, Sudan. The text of the stela… Kawa V about the flood of the Nile in the Year 6 has also been copied on three other stelae found in different locations of the Egyptian territory, which allowed the selection of signs carved in the Delta (Tanis), in Upper Egypt (Coptos and Matâanah) as well as in Sudan (Kawa). Ultimately, eight stelae dating from a period of nine years (689-681 BC) furnished the 439 signs commented in this volume and offered as facsimiles in 118 plates. The signs have been mainly compared with those of monuments and stelae of the Napatan period, but also with those of anterior and posterior periods when that seemed pertinent.'.

Contents: This book is devoted to the publication of the tomb and funerary ensemble of the king's son and High Priest of Ptah Sheshonq (22nd Dynasty, c. 830 BCE). The… tomb and its contents were found in Memphis in 1942. They were moved to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo soon after the discovery. The tomb is one of the few decorated tombs from the Third Intermediate Period. The scenes and funerary texts carved on the walls have important similarities with those of the tomb of pharaoh Osorkon II in Tanis (NRT I), as well as with the Theban funerary papyrus of Nestanebetisheru, daughter of the High Priest of Amun Pinedjem II, now in the British Museum (P. Greenfield). The tomb was found intact and its funerary equipment-comprising about 400 objects-is now in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, the Suez Museum and the Faculty of Arts of Alexandria. It provides outstanding evidence for the funerary objects belonging to members of the elite during this period. Some of these objects were specifically prepared for the burial of Sheshonq, while others had probably already been used while he was alive. The study of this ensemble also provides the opportunity to examine his other monuments and titles, particularly that of "hereditary prince". Language: French/Français.
