Arthur Miller (1915-2005) was a renowned American playwright. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1949 for his work, "Death of a Salesman." Miller's writing often had political and social undertones; most notably, "The Crucible" (1953), in which he used the Salem witch trials as an allegory for the intensity of the McCarthy era of the 1950s. First published by Associated Newspapers Ltd. in London in 1934, with a foreword by Lady Dickens, frontispiece portrait of Dickens, facsimile manuscript page, and additional illustrations. Written by Dickens between 1846 and 1849 for the private instruction of his children, the manuscript remained unpublished during his lifetime. It was released only after the death of his son Sir Henry Fielding Dickens in 1933, when the family authorized publication. Dickens's original manuscript was purchased by a group of private collectors and, in 1964, was presented to the Free Library of Philadelphia, which has held it ever since. Signed "Josie Baker" on the copyright page. Josephine Baker (1906-1975), a dancer and actress, was the first Black woman to appear in a major motion picture (Siren of the Tropics). Baker was a notable member of the Civil Rights Movement who refused to perform for segregated audiences. She was offered a leadership role in the movement by Coretta Scott King in 1968 after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., but declined to protect her children's safety. Baker and her husband, Jon Bouillon, raised 12 adopted children, which she deemed "The Rainbow Children" due to their varying ethnicities and religions. Her goal was to prove that a diverse group of people "could still be brothers.".
