SIGNED on the colophon in pencil by the artist, Aubrey Schwartz and hand numbered '3' of an edition limited to 60 signed and numbered copies, additionally inscribed, 'For Frank Gallop' the American TV and Radio personality. 18 color engraved plates printed by Schwartz himself on hand-made paper by Douglas Howell and finely bound for him by the Harcourt Bindery in brown morocco with gilt stmaped lettering and ruled borders with a blind-rolled floral edging and gilt floral dentelle, with Harcourt's brown cloth clipcase. FINE copy with only a trace of the inevitable toning to the handmade paper along the edges. Slipcase with some tribial rubbing to the tips, clean and sound otherwise. Schwartz was one of the 20th-century masters of etching and engraving, taking the medium to new creative and abstract ends. He studied printmaking at the Art Students League of New York and the Brooklyn Museum Art School. His preferred medium was the self-made artist book, publishing 'Predatory Birds' in the same year with Leonard Baskin at Gehenna Press and Midgets and Dwarfs in 1960. One can certainly detect a hint of Baskin's influence on this work, from the arrangement of typographic ornaments on the letterpress-printed title page and colophon, as well as some of the stylistic cues in Schwartz's etchings.
