Il suit son père à Dresde où ils restent de 1945 à 1957. De retour en Russie, il s'inscrit à l'Ecole d'Art Répine, d'abord en sculpture, puis par manque de matériau en "art plan". Il est renvoyé en 1959 pour non conformisme aux normes de l'art réaliste socialiste et doit alors exercé divers métiers.
