The book, written by John Checkley (1680-1754), aims to demonstrate the sacred offices, their distinctions, and their intended permanence in the church, ultimately identifying those who continue to execute them. In 1720 John Checkley was convicted by the General Court for upholding the doctrines of the church of England against the teachings of the New England divines. His " A Modest Proof" was abhorent to the Mathers and Wigglesworth who respoinded in his 1724 "Sober Remarks." Sabin 12364; Evans 2417; ESTC W20775 Modern crimosn cloth, leather spine label.
