Vol 1: xx + 596, vol 2: xi + 556 pp. Volume 1 illustrated with 89 b/w engraved drawings, 1 full page b/w engraving of the death of Captain Cook, 6 full colour, two- page, engraved maps (tipped in), a b/w engraved frontispiece portrait of Captain Cook, and a b/w engraved title page; Volume 2 illustrated with 55 b/w engraved drawings, 6 full colour, two-page, engraved maps (tipped in), 2 full page b/w engravings, and a b/w engraved frontispiece portrait of Sir Joseph Banks. Rebound with all new boards, spine, and endpapers. Gilt stamped short title on spine on both volumes. Volume 1 has a previous owner inscription on the front flyleaf, and some marginalia on the title page. Marbled edges all around on both. Text blocks of both volumes are slightly age browned, but are free of foxing or damage. The marbling on the foot of both volumes shows wear. Binding is strong and square, and the boards are unmarked and clean. Excellent examples of the high quality maps created by John Tallis & Co.…

First edition, [4],viii,257,[1]pp., with half-title and engraved frontispiece, cont. half calf, marbled paper boards, hinges slightly cracked, head and foot of spine worn with some light worming to raised bands, marbled paper on lower board peeling, but overall internally a clean and bright copy. Of the first work Hill notes "This account of John Byron's circumnavigation is usually ascribed to midshipman Charles Clerke, who later sailed on all three of Captain Cook's voyages.". Of the second work, Byron was midshipeman aboard the Wager when it was wrecked off the Chilean coast, and he provides a vivid account of the privations endured by the survivors. First edition of the anonymously published Newbery account of Commodore John Byron's circumnavigation in HMS Dolphin, usually attributed to Charles Clerke, then a midshipman on the voyage and later an officer on all three of Cook's voyages. The Dolphin sailed from Plymouth in July 1764 in company with HMS Tamar, officially for the East Indies, though its true purpose was the exploration of the South Seas. Byron returned to England in May 1766 after a voyage of a little over 22 months, the first British circumnavigation completed in under two years. Published six years before Hawkesworth's official account, the narrative became famous for its description of the Patagonian giants, "still something of a mystery" according to Hill. Byron, nicknamed "Foul-Weather Jack", had earlier survived the wreck of the Wager during Anson's circumnavigation; that ordeal later supplied details for the shipwreck scene in his grandson Lord Byron's Don Juan.
