She wrote two novels which were both we…ll-received. In The Semi-Detached House beautiful newlywed Lady Blanche Chester, now pregnant, is moving to a suburban home while her husband is away. She finds intrigue and annoyance as she encounters her new friends and villagers. In The Semi-Detached Couple, the young and gorgeous Helen Eskdale meets the wealthy aristocrat Lord Teviot, and everything clicked. This was a couple that was meant to be - the match of the year, if not the ages. But in the rush to the altar, there was no time for bride and groom to actually get to know each other. The question as time passes is can they keep their marriage from falling apart? The books were originally published in 1859 and 1860, and are here reissued in the publisher's "The Rescue Series". Condition: Both books have some wear to the binding, with House having the heavier wear. There is light tanning to the pages but both books remain in strong readable condition.

Even more importantly, this site is also a place where we are publishing whatever updates we have been able to obtain regarding who is still alive including classmates and/or spouses along with contact information and any status updates that have been provided. As we remember our Class (70+ years later) it s good to review what the class as a whole has accomplished, and then what a few of the individuals have done. We entered with 801, graduated 581, and were about 65 recently. Of that 581, about 530 were commissioned with others going back a year, or to other services, or to the outside world as then physically disqualified for Commissions. The Class as a whole and its individuals have contributed much to our country. Hard to match the war service record of the class, covering as it did the prelude to and then all of WWII, every year of Korea, and the Cold War including Greece, Suez crisis, Berlin Airlift, shouldering and patrols in Med and Baltic, Gulf of Sidra, and the Vietnam War and Yom Kippur War. Of all the classes ever graduated from the Naval Academy, the Class of 1939 comes in second in having had the most Killed In Action, with 52. Very good. No dust jacket. Rebound with all new boards, spine, and endpapers. Gilt stamped short title on spine on both volumes. Volume 1 has a previous owner inscription on the front flyleaf, and some marginalia on the title page. Marbled edges all around on both. Text blocks of both volumes are slightly age browned, but are free of foxing or damage. The marbling on the foot of both volumes shows wear. Binding is strong and square, and the boards are unmarked and clean. Excellent examples of the high quality maps created by John Tallis & Co.

According to the latter: 'On his retirement in November 1910, Holmes published What is and What Might Be (1911), a condemnation of the existing education system, which stressed competition rather than co-operation, emphasized visible results, and demanded the mechanical…obedience of the child. The book attracted wide public attention. [.] Shortly before his retirement, he became involved in the furore over the so-called 'HolmesMorant circular', a highly confidential memorandum which he had issued in January 1910 to inspectors'. The two letters are in fair condition, lightly aged and ruckled; Holmes's letter with light water tide mark around edges. Both with postage folds. ONE: Custance to Sandeman. ALS. 8 August 1911. 3pp, 16mo. Bifolium. Thirty-four lines. Addressed to 'My dear Sandeman' and signed 'Reginald Custance'. The information about 'Homer Lee's book [Lee (1851-1923) was an American engraver and inventor] is interesting, not to say amusing'. Reference to 'Gen. Chaffee's introduction' and Lee's apparent service in the American army and 'Chinese service'. 'A great number of people on this side were taken in by him. Personally I always thought he presented a very exaggerated view.' Turning to 'the Holmes pamphlet', which was given to Custance by 'an American Admiral', he discusses the 'very much amplified edition' titled 'What is and what might be', and how to acquire it. Ends: 'A friend of mie tells me that the ideal school is a [real?] one.' TWO: Holmes to Sandeman. ALS. 19 August [1911]. 2pp, 16mo. Addressed to 'Lt. Col. J. G. Sandeman M. V. O.' and signed 'E. G. A. Holmes'. 'My pamphlet on Sompting School [the school Holmes had set up in East Sussex] is not on sale; but I have written to the Printers and asked them to send you 4 copies.' He cannot spare more than four, as 'the stock is running very low, and half of it belongs to a friend of mine who paid back the whole cost to the printers'. With two cuttings: Custance's Who's Who entry, and a brief advertisement for Holmes's book.
