Wellin…gton was retreating towards Lisbon to take refuge behind his brilliantly prepared Lines of Torres Vedras, while Massena pursued him, harassed by Craufurd and his Light Division. Ever mindful of the benefits of favourable terrain upon which to contest a successful defensive action, Wellington, on the 27th of September, turned at bay at Bussaco to fight a delaying battle. The attacking French columns were compelled to labour up steeply rising broken country in the face of punishing fire and paid dearly for it, though their misfortunes in Portugal would soon become far worse. This excellent and detailed book focusses entirely on the battle at Bussaco and includes many photographs and maps of the battlefield together with illustrations which were not included in the original edition. Bensley for his notable achievements in the field of histochemistry. This special symposium presented at the University of Chicago on November 13, 1942, was limited to the theme of the physical and chemical organization of the cytoplasm, the principal subject of the investigations of Dr. Bensley and his students for the past decade. Most biologists will find this volume of especial value and interest for in this collection of papers is presented not only an historical account of the rapid progress made in recent years in this field of fundamental knowledge but the lines along which new discoveries may be expected in the future. The battle resulted in a British victory against the French forces.Illustrated with a frontispiece, one folding plate, seven folding maps to the pocket to the rear, and in-text illustrations throughout. Collated, complete.By George L. Chambers. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Spine is faded. Discolouration to the extremities. Light marks and a little light rubbing to the cloth. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Hinges are starting but firm. Author's inscription to the recto of the front endpaper, partially obscured by a prior owner's label. Heavy ink mark to the tail of the textblock, from the paste downs and endpapers, lighter to the first and last few pages. Internally, generally firmly bound.
