There are many people living who remember the time when everybody knew all about the Duke of Wellington and the Peninsular War, but a generation is now spring ing up, or rather has sprung up, of which the majority knows little and cares less about the Great Duke and his campaigns.

On the other hand, I find a great number of people on both sides of the Atlantic who are so much interested therein as'to read every available book on the subject.

Amongst these are, of course, to be found large numbers of soldiers - for the Peninsular Wars were wars in which strategy had an all-important part - while the display of tactics was of no mean order.

I do not propose to put before the reader my views on strategy in these campaigns, and only occasionally do I intend to allude to tactics. My Object is to make available good plans of the battles accompanied by views illustrative of the important points. Some histories give the plans more or less correctly, and others give views, but what is wanted nowadays is a judicious mixture of both plans and views.
