Each series is bound with separate dated title pages and pagination. Bound with half title to 'Songs for the Nursery'.Frontispiece to First Series.Whistle-Binkie offers a collection of Scottish poetry and song anthology, typically styled in an imitation of Robert Burns. The series was enduringly popular, and the finalWhistle Binkieanthology appeared in 1890.The term 'Whistle-Binkie' being here applied to any kind of popular entertainer, whether singer, story-teller, or indeed whistler; John D. Carrick helpfully supplied an erudite dissertation on the subject to the 1839 edition. Subsequent series were edited by Alexander Roger, eventually running to the five series presented here. The work completed in 1843 with a sixth part called "Songs for the Nursery," a very valuable and curious collection of modern nursery rhymes and songs.
