Erstausgabe
Zustand: Very good plus. First printing. First edition of this early automobile-inspired novel, in which a young woman wins a car in a newspaper's puzzle competition. Dorothy's award of a car leads to many adventures, from learning to drive, to literary tourism (visiting the homes of Longfellow, Alcott, and more), to visiting a flying circus to watch aviators in their "motors in the air." Well illustrated with both photographs and artist drawings: one of the contributions is from Arthur Rackham (appropriately, for the "Fairy Story" chapter). 7.5'' x 5''. Original red three-toned pictorial cloth stamped in white, grey, and yellow. Illustrated with black and white plates by C.M. Relyea, R.B. Birch, Arthur Rackham, and others; and a few photographic plates. 386 pages. Contemporary ink gift inscription dated 1911 to front fly leaf, over which a number in dark pastel. Moderate rubbing to boards, with white letter on spine slightly effaced. Rear hinge expertly repaired. Interior clean.
