Tirage à part très rare de ce mémoire novateur. Camille Miot (18…38-1904) fut chef de clinique de Blanchet, à la clinique otologique de l'établissement des sourds-muets, puis fonda en 1868 une clinique des maladies de l'oreille. Il fut un auriste très réputé, l'un des premiers promoteurs de l'otologie en France. Ce mémoire constitue l'une de ses publications les plus importantes. Miot commence par rappeler l'anatomie et la physiologie de la caisse du tympan, puis l'anatomie pathologique des lésions pouvant y être observées. Il expose ensuite le diagnostic des lésions de la caisse du tympan, et les indications et contre-indications de la mobilisation de l'étrier. Miot rappelle les quelques procédés opératoires récemment décrits (procédés de Kessel, de Schwartze, de Gellé, de Boucheron) puis rapporte de façon détaillée son procédé personnel, avec le matériel utilisé, les anesthésiques et les mesures d'asepsie employés puis le protocole opératoire. Il expose les complications, l'évolution et les résultats (sur la perception crânienne, l'audition et les bourdonnements). Il considère que "la mobilisation directe de l'étrier est le moyen le plus efficace de combattre la surdité par ankylose de l'étrier" et rapporte 71 résultats favorables sur 126 oreilles opérées rentrant dans les indications, et aucun décès. Miot rapporte in fine 23 observations personnelles sélectionnées et détaillées. Cette chirurgie de l'étrier se développa dans les années suivantes, notamment aux USA, avant d'être sévèrement condamnée en 1894 devant le nombre important d'échecs et la publication de cas de méningites mortelles. Elle fut redécouverte au milieu du XXe siècle (stapédectomie et stapédotomie).
