An attractive facsimile printing of the second enlarged edition of the amusing biography, including a colour title lead, and notes on Alken and Nimrod. A charming facsimile of the Second revised and enlarged edition of the Memoirs of the Life of the Late John Mytton, the influential biography on the Regency rake, eccentric and politician, written by sport journalist and author Charles James Apperley under the pseudonym Nimrod. Believed to have been printed in 1914, originally published in 1837. In the publisher's original green cloth, with a colour title leaf, frontispiece, and nineteen other colour plates by British painters Henry Thomas Alken and T.J. Rawlins. This particular facsimile contains an insightful introduction on Alken's illustrations, written by British art collector and journalist Joseph Grego, and an introductory notice on Nimrod written by H.C. A friend of his subject, Nimrod's biography on Mytton is perhaps more famous than the larger-than-life figure himself, and such is due to his brilliant recounting of Mytton's various exploits, including bribing voters into parliament, attempting to jump over a tollgate with horse and carriage, and many other wild stories In the publisher's original green cloth. Externally, mostly smart, with small marks to front board extremities and to the rear board, and slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. End papers are bright and clean with minor signs of browning. Internally, firmly bound, with very minor wear to hinge between plate and p.51. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good. book.

Gilt titling, bordering and edging. The gilt is benign and very lightly worn. The spine has five ridges. Titling and decoration are worn. The leather is also much worn. The spine is fit and healthy. The boards have storage / shelving wear about. Nonetheless, they are dignified and pleasing. Within, the tissue separators are in immaculate condition. Marbled end papers with gilt edge decoration that are in elegant, most pleasing condition. The gilt edging is a little worn but is otherwise gratifyingly smart. The contents have some amiable evidence of usage with occasional handling marks and wear, but in general and by far, the pages are wonderfully neat and tidy and amenable. Apperley had been Mytton's neighbour in Shropshire, and both had lived together in Calais to avoid creditors. "Apperley's task was to write the life of a man who, while he was one of the most heroic sportsmen that ever lived, was also drunken, diseased and insane, and he performed the task with admirable judgment. [Cambridge History of English and American Literature, vol. XIV]. Three of the plates in this first edition (2, 8 and 9) did not appear in the second edition and valued highter than the second edition which had 18 plates. Owner inscription front cover pastedown. I, very light waterstain to margin of titlepage of Northern Tour; light waterstain to margin of final pages of The Horse & the Hound; none-the-less a very attractive set. xvi, 598; ix, [1], 285, vii, 306; [ii], 427, [1], [4](index]; Charles James Apperley (1777-1843) was a Welsh sportsman and sporting writer, who following his marriage devoted himself to fox hunting. In 1821 he began to submit articles to The Sporting Magazine under the pseudonym of 'Nimrod' on horse races, hunt meets and other sporting events. These articles helped the magazine's circulation double in a few years, and as a result the then proprietor, Mr. Pitman, gave Apperley a handsome salary and picked up the expenses of his tours. Unfortunately, after Pitman's death the owners sued Apperley for the money that had been advanced to him, and in order to escape imprisonment Apperley fled to Calais were he made a living as a writer. His two most famous works The Life of a Sportsman and Memoris of the Life of John Mytton were illustrated by Henry Thomas Alken.
