A charming facsimile of the Second revised and enlarged edition of the Memoirs of the Life of the Late John Mytton, the influential biography on the Re…gency rake, eccentric and politician, written by sport journalist and author Charles James Apperley under the pseudonym Nimrod. Believed to have been printed in 1914, originally published in 1837. In the publisher's original green cloth, with a colour title leaf, frontispiece, and nineteen other colour plates by British painters Henry Thomas Alken and T.J. Rawlins. This particular facsimile contains an insightful introduction on Alken's illustrations, written by British art collector and journalist Joseph Grego, and an introductory notice on Nimrod written by H.C. A friend of his subject, Nimrod's biography on Mytton is perhaps more famous than the larger-than-life figure himself, and such is due to his brilliant recounting of Mytton's various exploits, including bribing voters into parliament, attempting to jump over a tollgate with horse and carriage, and many other wild stories In the publisher's original green cloth. Externally, mostly smart, with small marks to front board extremities and to the rear board, and slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. The boards have storage / shelving wear about. Nonetheless, they are dignified and pleasing. Within, the tissue separators are in immaculate condition. Marbled end papers with gilt edge decoration that are in elegant, most pleasing condition. The gilt edging is a little worn but is otherwise gratifyingly smart. The contents have some amiable evidence of usage with occasional handling marks and wear, but in general and by far, the pages are wonderfully neat and tidy and amenable. In 1821 he began to submit articles to The Sporting Magazine under the pseudonym of 'Nimrod' on horse races, hunt meets and other sporting events. These articles helped the magazine's circulation double in a few years, and as a result the then proprietor, Mr. Pitman, gave Apperley a handsome salary and picked up the expenses of his tours. Unfortunately, after Pitman's death the owners sued Apperley for the money that had been advanced to him, and in order to escape imprisonment Apperley fled to Calais were he made a living as a writer. His two most famous works The Life of a Sportsman and Memoris of the Life of John Mytton were illustrated by Henry Thomas Alken.
