Prowazek described the species of Rickettsia bacterium that caused typhus in 1915, though Ricketts had proven that the eponymous bacterium was the cause of the Rocky Mountain Fever in 1906, and had been spread by wood-ticks. Both Prowazek and Ricketts died of typhus in the years of their publications, 1915 and 1910.
