In the publishers white pigskin, very clean with only a few spots, blocked in gilt on upper cover with a circular design which incorporates hand tooling, gilt ties to imitation spine bands, gilt spine titling. Internally, [8], 141 pp, [1], [1] limitation, 24 woodcuts by Edward Burne-Jones, top edge gilt, others uncut, the designs were prepared for engraving by Dorothy Hawksley, 5 of which were cut on wood by Loyd Haberly and the remaining 19 by R John Beedham, initial letters printed in green, text in red and black, an edition limited to just 285 copies bound as this, there were also 15 specials. With its issued slip case, silk pull & lined & titled box. The illustrations chosen by Loyd Haberly were culled from a set of about 70 drawings, prepared by Burne_Jones for William Morris's narrative Poem, Cupid and Psyce (Harrop). His own reputation is now largely eclipsed by that of Gerard Manley Hopkins, whose work he helped to popularize. Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was an English painter and close collaborator with William Morris. The illustrations incorporated into this edition of Bridges' Eros and Psyche were originally created for Morris, but were deemed too difficult to print and thus were not published at the time. In 1935, Loyd Haberly, then employed at Gregynog Press, had twenty-four of the Burne-Jones illustrations reproduced as woodcuts to be used in this edition. Gregynog Press, located in Newtown, Wales, was established by sisters Margaret and Gwendolyn Davies in 1922. The press was noted for the quality of both its printing (under Herbert John Hodgson and, briefly, Loyd Haberly) and its binding, under George Fisher. 1388493. Shelved Dupont Bookstore.
