En mettant l'accent sur les rapports sociaux de sexe, les auteurs montrent qu'entre l'avant-guerre et l'Occupation, les représentations filmiques du masculin et du féminin sont fortement contrastées. On passe ainsi d'une relation de fascination et de domination entre un homme d'âge mur (Harry Baur, Raimu, Jules Berry.) et une jeune fille (Danielle Darrieux, Michèle Morgan.) à une situation où la femme incarne un nouveau type de personnage actif comme celui de Madeleine Renaud dans Le ciel est à vous de Jean Grémillon. À partir de la Libération, se déchaîne une violente misogynie qui se traduit par l'arrivée de véritables harpies persécutant des hommes dominés, à l'image de Simone Signoret et Bernard Blier dans Manèges d'Yves Allègret. En 1956, Brigitte Bardot dans Et Dieu créa la femme de Roger Vadim mettra fin à cette « drôle de guerre » des sexes. Tournant le dos à une pure histoire des formes et des seuls chefs-d'oeuvre hors du temps, les auteurs éclairent ces représentations symboliques en les ancrant dans le contexte socioculturel de leur apparition. L'analyse de la production de chaque période, dans toute sa diversité (dont la quasi totalité des 220 films de l'Occupation), leur permet de sortir de l'ombre des réalisations rejetées dans l'oubli par la cinéphilie dominante, et de renouveler profondément la vision des «chefs-d'oeuvre».

Los textos aquí reunidos fueron inicialmente publicados en la prestigiosa revista Cahiers du Cinéma como artículos sueltos, y posteriormente compilados y organizados en cuatro bloques temáticos. Bürch centra su análisis en las primeras manifestaciones cinematográficas. Es en los modos de representación primitivos donde encuentra la esencia de la praxis fílmica. Y es por ello que sus conclusiones sobre la relación entre tiempos y planos, su visión del espacio fílmico, o su entendimiento de los lenguajes y los estilos siguen siendo, hoy como ayer, piezas clave para abordar la estructura de la creación cinematográfica. Nacido en 1932 en San Francisco, Noël Burch llegó a París en 1951 donde realizó estudios en el IDHEC (Instituto de Altos Estudios de Cinematografía por sus siglas en francés) y trabajó como ayudante de Pierre Kast. Ha dirigido varios cortometrajes y colaborado en la emisión Cineastes de notre temps de Janine Bazin y André S. Labarthe. En 1976 fundó junto a Daniel Manciet y Jean-André Fieschi el Institut de Formation Cinematographique.
