Innen ist das Papier teils zeitbedingt gebräunt, Seiten und Tafeln teils etwas angestaubt, teils etwas finger- oder stockfleckig. Seiten teils mit Randläsionen, Seiten teils gering beschädigt, meist aber von guter Erhaltung, desgleichen die zahlreichen, teils ausfaltbaren Kupfertafeln. Heinrich Bünting (Hannover 1545-1606 Hannover) erwarb in Wittenberg den Magistergrad, war dort und…später im Schloß Calenberg bei Hannover als Pfarrer tätig, dann ab 1575 in Gronau, wo er seine beiden Hauptwerke schrieb: Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae (ein mit teilweise skurrilen Holzschnittkarten illustrierter Reiseführer zur biblisch-topographischen Geographie, EA. Helmstädt 1581, 61 Ausgaben bis 1757 in lat., dt., holländ., engl., dän. u. tschechischer Sprache 1757!) und die mit zahlreichen Wappen, Portraits und Holzschnitt-Ansichten illustrierte Braunschweig-Lüneburgische Chronica (EA. 1584, mehrere Auflagen bis 1722). Lightly trimmed along bottom margin with slight loss of lettering, unobtrusive marginal imperfections mended, generally a fine dark impression. Map of Asia as Pegasus, one of ten maps in Bü…nting's Itinerarium, in which the author, a theological commentator, rewrote the Bible as an illustrated travel book. Other maps in the series bear out his imaginative approach to cartography, which pictures the world in the form of a cloverleaf and Europe as the Queen of the World. This is one of the more dramatic curiosity maps, depicted in the form of Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek mythology. Pegasus' head is represented by Turkey and his wings Tartary; the forelegs are Arabia and the saddle blanket Persia; the left hind leg is India and the right the Malay Peninsula. It is interesting that despite the Itinerarium being about the Bible, the symbolism of classical mythology was still considered appropriate for this map (Baynton-Williams). On this state of the Asia map more symbols and decorative features have been added to the map, including ships, a mermaid, and a merman as well as other fabulous sea monsters in the oceans; the profiles of the various towns and cities have also been enlarged. Henrich Bunting was a Protestant theologian and teacher born in Hanover, in what is now Germany. He attended the University of Wittenberg and graduated in 1569. He then began work as a preacher but caused some controversy with his teachings; he was dismissed from appointments in both Lemgo and Goslar. He is best known today for his book, Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae (Travel book through Holy Scripture), a travel collection and commentary of the geography of the Bible. The book provided the most complete summary of biblical geography then available and described the Holy Land by following the travels of various notable people from the Old and New Testaments. First published in Madgeburg in 1581, Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae was a very popular book for the time. Over 60 editions were published between 1581 and 1757.

Rare third(?) edition, in the original German, of a classic account of Biblical travels, the Itinerarium sacrae scripturae, written by the Hannover (in Lower Saxony) Lutheran pastor and theologian Heinrich Bünting (1545-1606), first published by Jakob Lucius the elder at Helmstedt in Lower… Saxony in 1581, with the third volume, De monetis et mensuris sacrae scripturae, added in 1582. It is here bound with the first edition of Bünting's complementary Chronica, a chronical of his native region made to accompany the present third edition of his Itinerarium. These editions therefore brought Bünting's work largely to its definitive form. Both proved extremely popular, and most later editions were produced as matching sets of the Itinerarium and Chronica, which appeared in almost 80 editions (in seven languages) into the 18th century. "However much a work of the study, this book [the Itinerarium] could be easily taken and read as a travel book. Bünting, although he had never actually visited Palestine, produced an original work by recasting sacred scripture into a Reissbuch" (Noonan); "the most complete summary of the knowledge of that day concerning the geography of the biblical events" (Van der Heijden, p. 55). The Chronica, matching in format and produced by the same printer and publisher at the same time, contains a wealth of historical, military, heraldic and genealogical information, beautifully illustrated with finely detailed woodcuts, with a special emphasis on the regions around Braunschweig and Lüneburg in Lower Saxony.The contemporary binding of the present copy is spectacular and remarkable, almost certainly produced in Saxony and possibly by Nikolaus Müller in Wittenberg, where Bünting studied. It gives the date of the binding itself (the year after publication), the initials of the owner who commissioned it, and shows a rare pair of dated panel stamps (portraits of Luther and Melanchthon, both 1556), and one of the three rolls is dated 1563. The "1581" and "1582" versions of the Itinerarium published in Helmsted also seem likely to be issues of a single edition. If so the present Itinerarium is the third edition, after 1581/82 Helmsted and 1583 Wolfenbüttel.With the unidentified initials AP of the first owner on the 1586 binding, a 1681 owner's inscription, "H. de Veltheim permuta Dn. J Haltmeier Ao 1681", perhaps meaning the late minister of the church Johannes Haltmeier (1590-1664) of Markt Alvensleben in Sachsen-Anhalt. Also with an early drawing in the margin of the Chronica L1. The binding shows some minor abrasions, mostly on the back board, but the panel stamps and tooling are generally well-preserved. On each board, the panel stamp appears in the central field, with a space above and below (used on the front board for the owner's initials and date, with 3 impressions of an ornament (7.5 x 5 mm) flanking and between the initials, and 2 impressions of a clover leaf (10.5 x 8 mm) flanking the year), the whole in four concentric rectangular frames made with rolls (the 3rd from the inside doubled at the head and foot) edged with multiple fillets, the rolls from inside to outside 1st: 4 standing human figures or putti (1 with a halo and above it a winged head) separated by dotted bands and foliage (6 x 136 mm); 2nd: 3 medallion portraits in profile and a dated text block, separated by foliage, from above to below the heads facing right, left, right (with the date "15 . 63" in the foliage between the 1st and 2nd portraits), followed by the text block ""MATHE[-]|VS * SIM|ANS |* 63" (12 x 149 mm); 3rd: interlaced arcs (in outline with a dotted arc on its outside) and straight segments (solid) crossing to form knots with 4 dots (15 x 129, 147 or 166 mm - in any case a multiple of 18.4 mm); and 4th: the same as 1st. Further with 2 strap fastenings with brass catch-plates (clasps and most of the straps lost) and each board with 4 brass cornerpieces with bosses, blue-green edges. With 3 title pages, the 1st in red and black with "Ein Reisebuch" printed from a woodcut, the 2nd in black using the same woodcut in the title, along with a woodcut device (a large and elaborate woodcut tailpiece with scrollwork decoration and a putto standing as if crucified) and the 3rd with a woodcut arabesque; 7 do.

The first deals with the travels from the Old Testament, starting with a description and a woodcut plan of Jerusalem. Two other woodcut folding plates show the Temple of Solomon and the route the Jews took from Egypt to the Holy Land. The second part explains the Biblical currencies and units of measurement. The third part resembles the first, but deals with the journeys from the New Testament. The work closes with a short theological treatise on the four Evangelists. With an owner's inscription on flyleaf. Browned throughout, some marginal smudges, some occasional small spots and one plate slightly torn along the fold. Binding somewhat soiled, spine restored.
