Single Sheet (sheet size 12 x 15 1/4 inches). (Good impression, ageing, corner margin missed). This beautifully rare woodcut view of the holy city of Jerusalem is depicted as seen from the east. It includes numerous place names, in and around the walled city, such as Kings David' and Solomon's temples, the Olive trees Mount, etc. At the upper left the city of Bethlehem is shown. From Bunting's Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae. Das ist Ein Reisebuch, [-ander Theil] uber di gantze Heilige Schrifft. -- De monetis et mensuris sacrae scripturae. First published in 1581, Bunting's celebrated biblical geography includes his famous world map showing the three continents of Europe, Asia and Africa on a cloverleaf projection with Jerusalem at the centre, the eastern coast of South America appears on the far left, England and Scandinavia in the north (Shirley 142). The ocean contains several mermaids, sea-monsters and a beautiful ship off the coast of America. Other maps of the Holy Land, Egypt, and views of Jerusalem and the Temple of Solomon. In the year the 'Itinarium' was published, it marked the start of the Anglo-Spanish War and France had entered a 'seventh' War of Religion against the Huguenots. A few years earlier in 1554, the great King of Spain acquired the claim to the Kingdom of Jerusalem; from his father Charles I. The title was formally claimed by various European dynasties and royal houses; however, none of them made any true attempt to actually reign over the territory of Jerusalem. It was most frequently used as a symbol of power over the land, but always convenient during times of War - such as how Philip II used this title in addition to financing the Catholic league to further his agenda of vanquishing the French Calvinists. The Itinerarium was an exceedingly popular work, running to ten editions in seven languages over a period of seventy years from its first publication. The book describes the travels of the religious figures of the Old and New Testaments of the Bible as well as its geography, accompanied by some interesting maps that take more than a little liberty with the actualities. For more information on this map, or a warm welcome to see other maps and books of our collection at 72nd Street NYC, please contact Natalie Zadrozna.…

Original copper-engraved decorative map (28.5 x 37.5 cm) showing the Middle East in the shape of Pegasus. German black letter text to verso. Lightly trimmed along bottom margin with slight loss of lettering, unobtrusive marginal imperfections mended, generally a fine dark impression. Map of Asia as Pegasus, one of ten maps in Bünting's Itinerarium, in which the author, a theological commentator, rewrote the Bible as an illustrated travel book. Other maps in the series bear out his imaginative approach to cartography, which pictures the world in the form of a cloverleaf and Europe as the Queen of the World. This is one of the more dramatic curiosity maps, depicted in the form of Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek mythology. Pegasus' head is represented by Turkey and his wings Tartary; the forelegs are Arabia and the saddle blanket Persia; the left hind leg is India and the right the Malay Peninsula. It is interesting that despite the Itinerarium being about the Bible, the symbolism of classical mythology was still considered appropriate for this map (Baynton-Williams). On this state of the Asia map more symbols and decorative features have been added to the map, including ships, a mermaid, and a merman as well as other fabulous sea monsters in the oceans; the profiles of the various towns and cities have also been enlarged. Henrich Bunting was a Protestant theologian and teacher born in Hanover, in what is now Germany. He attended the University of Wittenberg and graduated in 1569. He then began work as a preacher but caused some controversy with his teachings; he was dismissed from appointments in both Lemgo and Goslar. He is best known today for his book, Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae (Travel book through Holy Scripture), a travel collection and commentary of the geography of the Bible. The book provided the most complete summary of biblical geography then available and described the Holy Land by following the travels of various notable people from the Old and New Testaments. First published in Madgeburg in 1581, Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae was a very popular book for the time. Over 60 editions were published between 1581 and 1757.…

4 parts in 1 volume. Rare eighth(?) edition of the Dutch translation of a work on Biblical travels, written by the German Protestant pastor and theologian Heinrich Bünting (1545-1606), first published in German in 1581 and translated by Matthias Hasaert (1578?-1663). The work proved extremely popular and appeared in almost 80 editions up to the 18th century. "However much a work of the study, this book could be easily taken and read as a travel book. Bünting, although he had never actually visited Palestine, produced an original work by recasting Sacred Scripture into a Reissbuch" (Noonan). The work is divided into four parts. The first deals with the travels from the Old Testament, starting with a description and a woodcut plan of Jerusalem. Two other woodcut folding plates show the Temple of Solomon and the route the Jews took from Egypt to the Holy Land. The second part explains the Biblical currencies and units of measurement. The third part resembles the first, but deals with the journeys from the New Testament. The work closes with a short theological treatise on the four Evangelists. With an owner's inscription on flyleaf. Browned throughout, some marginal smudges, some occasional small spots and one plate slightly torn along the fold. Binding somewhat soiled, spine restored. Overall a fair copy.l STCN (3 copies); WorldCat (1 copy); cf. Laor, Maps of the Holy Land 139-146, 968 (maps in other eds., 1582-1648); F.T. Noonan, The road to Jerusalem: pilgrimage and travel in the age of discovery (2007), pp. 158-160. Contemporary vellum, spine restored, modern endpapers. With 5 woodcut and 2 engraved folding maps, 4 individual title-pages with a woodcut device, and some woodcut tailpieces. Pages: [16], 355, [9]; [2], 36; [4], 163, [3]; 24 pp.…

Single Sheet (sheet size 12 x 15 1/4 inches). (Good impression, ageing, corner margin missed). A beautiful late 16th century woodcut map of Israel and Egypt depicting the historic Exodus by Heinrich Bunting. From Bunting's Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae. Das ist Ein Reisebuch, [-ander Theil] uber di gantze Heilige Schrifft. -- De monetis et mensuris sacrae scripturae. The map is in excellent condition, showing the appropriate tone of paper for its age; It is highly detailed with illustrations from this important Biblical narrative, such as the Egyptian Pharaoh drowning in the Red Sea and Jonas riding the whale. Notable cities are carefully displayed with a building illustration and labels. The path of the Israelites is traced starting out at the lower left in Egypt, across the Red Sea, through the Wilderness, and ending at the upper right corner to the west of the Jordan River - with various stopping places indicated along the way. Heinrich Bunting was a Protestant professor of theology at Hanover. Bunting's work describes the travels of religious figures in the Bible and was the most complete summary of geography of the Bible of this period. The Itinerarium was an exceedingly popular work, running to ten editions in seven languages over a period of seventy years from its first publication. Bunting's work describes the travels of religious figures in the Bible and was the most complete summary of geography of the Bible of this period. It is accompanied by some interesting maps that take more than a little liberty with the actualities. The first part begins with the definition of the German mile and the biblical stadium, gives a list of biblical place-names with their coordinates, describe Jerusalem and the walla, gates, buildings mentioned in the Bible, before proceeding with the lives and journeys of the patriarchs, moses and Isrealites, Joshua, and concluding with the Maccabean Wars.
