Etched f/piece + 56, 9 further etched plates ex-pagination, numerous text vignettes; main problem is heavy tanning to recto (but not image) of f/piece and last page, but this seems to be common to all copies, t.p. also largely, but lightly, tanned, tanning spots to most plates, gutter incipiently opening after f/piece and others tender throughout although text-block basically secure. A bright and attractive copy of this fairly uncommon folio though needs a little discreet attention to gutters. 25.5 cm x 35.5 cm.

Alfred-Louis Brunet-Debaines (1845-1939) is a French painter, draughtsman and engraver who made his career in England. His achievements for the book are truly striking creations and were hailed as such. Sent by the Queen of the Belgians, Marie-Henriette of Austria, Archduchess, to Louis D'Orléans: "Pour le Duc de Nemours de la part de la reine. Noel 1883" "For the Duke of Nemours on behalf of the Queen. Christmas 1883". Ironically, Louis D'Orléans, Duke of Nemours and youngest son of King Louis-Philippe, was elected King of the Belgians by the Belgian congress in 1831, but the English didn't want a French King on the Belgian throne and Louis-Philippe had to renounce the name of his son. It is a Prince of the House of Saxe-Cobourg who will be designated to be the first King of the Belgians and he will marry the daughter of Louis-Philippe and the sister of the Duke of Nemours: Louise D'Orléans, in 1833, but she will die in 1850 and Leopold I will remarry Marie-Henriette of Austria. The Duke of Nemours was thus a close friend of the Belgian royal family, since he was Leopold's brother in law. Royal provenance: ex-libris with arms: Library of S. A. R. Signature à la mine de plomb de Brunet Debaine en marge inférieure. ''Natif du Havre en 1845, Brunet-Debaines fut l'élève de Normand, Lalanne et Pils. Il a débuté au Salon de 1866. Mais c'est surtout en sa qualité d'aquafortiste qu'il a pris une place distinguée parmi les modernes''. (in Bénézit). ''Il se consacre très jeune à l'étude de la gravure et s'y intéresse réellement grâce à la Société des Aquafortistes dont il devient membre en 1865. Il perfectionne alors ses connaissances auprès de Léon Gacherel, Maxime Lalanne et surtout Jules Jacquemart qui semble l'avoir particulièrement influencé. Nous savons qu'outre des planches relatives à sa province natale, Brunet-Debaines était aussi graveur de reproductions ; en fait, planches de reproductions ou originales marchaient de pair (à celles d'après Turner il faut encore ajouter celles d'après Constable, Ruysdaël ou Corot). Il acquit dans ce domaine une certaine célébrité et fut ainsi l'un des principaux graveurs du Recueil d'estampes gravées à l'eau-forte de la galerie Durand-Ruel (1873 - 1875) où il interprétait les tableaux des artistes recensés à l'époque par Durand-Ruel''.
