L'ouvrage est illustré de douze grandes planches hors texte tirées sur vélin d'Arches, onze eaux-fortes et une planche en manière de lavis, dues à Alfred-Louis Brunet…-Debaines et à son élève Henri Toussaint, auxquelles s'ajoutent trente-trois figures gravées dans le texte, plans, détails architecturaux et vues. Texte imprimé sur deux colonnes. Reliure de l'époque en plein maroquin bleu marine. Dos à nerfs orné de fers à la coquille, titre doré ; large encadrement doré sur les plats composé de plaques ornementales et de fers à la coquille, riche dentelle intérieure, tranches dorées. Coins émoussés, quelques frottements. Rousseurs éparses dans les marges du texte. Très bel exemplaire. Inscription de présentation manuscrite : « Pour le Duc de Nemours de la part de la Reine. Noël 1883 », adressée à Louis d'Orléans (1814-1896), duc de Nemours, second fils de Louis-Philippe Ier. Le volume porte ensuite l'ex-libris armorié de S.A.R. la duchesse de Vendôme, princesse Henriette de Belgique, puis celui d'Antonio Barrette. L'ouvrage réunit dans l'évocation des grandes ruines monastiques du Yorkshire un auteur anglais et deux graveurs français. Les chapitres de William Chambers Lefroy avaient d'abord paru dans The Portfolio avant d'être repris et développés dans cette édition. Rievaulx, Byland, Fountains, Kirkstall, Jervaulx, Mount Grace, Bolton ou Whitby y sont envisagés à la fois par leur architecture, leur histoire et leur situation dans le paysage ; Lefroy prévient d'ailleurs dans sa préface que l'architecte, l'antiquaire et l'artiste ne devraient pas être séparés lorsqu'il s'agit de comprendre ces ruines. L'identité de l'auteur a longtemps souffert d'une confusion bibliographique avec son homonyme William Lefroy, futur doyen de Norwich. William Chambers Lefroy (1849-1915) appartenait à un tout autre milieu : juriste de formation, il fut notamment Assistant Keeper au National Portrait Gallery avant de poursuivre sa carrière dans l'administration publique et l'enseignement. Cette proximité avec les institutions artistiques éclaire naturellement l'attention accordée dans son livre autant aux formes architecturales qu'à leur interprétation par l'image. Alfred-Louis Brunet-Debaines (1845-1939) assume l'essentiel de cette interprétation graphique, Henri Toussaint (1849-1911) intervenant également dans la suite. Tous deux appartiennent à cette génération d'aquafortistes français qui trouva en Angleterre un public particulièrement attentif au renouveau de l'eau-forte originale. La pierre rongée, les grandes arcades ouvertes et la végétation qui reprend possession des bâtiments donnent à leur technique une matière particulièrement heureuse ; les planches ne se bornent pas à documenter les monuments, elles restituent la présence que Lefroy cherche précisément à retrouver dans son texte. Mais cet exemplaire possède une autre histoire, inscrite en quelques mots au seuil du livre. À Noël 1883, il est destiné au duc de Nemours « de la part de la Reine ». Tout conduit à reconnaître dans cette souveraine Marie-Henriette d'Autriche, reine des Belges et épouse de Léopold II, même si l'inscription ne la nomme pas expressément. Le cadeau ravivait, cinquante-deux ans plus tard, un épisode singulier de l'histoire belge : le 3 février 1831, le Congrès national avait choisi le jeune Nemours pour souverain avant que Louis-Philippe ne refuse la couronne en son nom. Celle-ci revint finalement à Léopold de Saxe-Cobourg, qui épousa l'année suivante Louise-Marie d'Orléans, sur même de Nemours. En 1883, Marie-Henriette fut ainsi l'épouse de Léopold II, fils de cette Louise-Marie : la reine qui offre le livre était la femme du neveu du prince auquel il était destiné. L'ex-libris de la duchesse de Vendôme prolonge cette histoire familiale avec une précision intéressante ; Henriette de Belgique épousa en 1896 71pp.
