Paperback. Everything here was eventually tainted, Ellis thought. In Australia in the 1840s, the lives of two very different women intersect. Ellis MacRorie is shipped to Victoria from her Scottish homeland by her bankrupt father; Leerpeen Weelan, her Aboriginal servant known as Louisa, has lost her tribe in a bloody act of violence. Forced to marry a man she does not love, and isolated from all society, Ellis is resigned to a wretched life on the remote Western District homestead of Strathcarron. After the tragic death of two babies, she is ready is give up altogether. Although Louisa has endured unspeakable suffering, she becomes an unprecedented source of guidance, friendship and strength for Ellis. When the American Romantic landscape painter, sketcher and collector Sanford P. Hart comes to stay at Strathcarron, the two women are transformed forever - in both enriching and devastating measures. More than 150 years later, ambitious curatorial assistant Cornelia, researching an exhibition on S. P. Hart for the National Gallery of Victoria, makes a remarkable discovery that has the potential to rewrite history. However, it is not Hart's paintings that offer a glimpse into the untold events of nineteenth-century rural Australia, but rather something very rare .The Longing is a novel about loss, finding home and the significance of history - what is recorded and those events that remain undiscovered. Good condition - some corners of pages folded over, and minor wear to edges. Slight tanning on some edges.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A Singular Voice brings together essays by the controversial and popular Australian art and architecture scholar, Joan Kerr, that have appeared over the past 30 years. The Joan Kerr story is as much a history of changing attitudes to Australian art and architecture as it is a record of the remarkable academic career of a woman distinguished by her open mind, her infectious enthusiasm for everything from colonial architecture to contemporary Aboriginal art, and her generosity to her peers. From the ancient remains of a dinosaur in an outback museum display to the importance of art in our everyday lives, Joan Kerr always had an interesting and different point of view. Whether she wrote about 19th-century Tasmanian painting, the architecture of imprisonment, or the forgotten and marginalized of Australian art, her writing crackles with energy. Her voice was unlike any other--a singular voice.A Singular Voice is part of the four-book series Australian Studies in Art and Art Theory and is published with the assistance of the Getty Foundation, the Gordon Darling Foundation, and the Nelson Meers Foundation.

Very heavy, and delivery costs may be a consideration especially outside Britain. Johann Joseph Eugene von Gurard (1811Ð1901) was an Austrian-born artist, active in Australia and New Zealand from 1852 until 1882. Known for his finely detailed landscapes in the tradition of the Dsseldorf school of painting, he is represented in Australia's major public galleries, and is recognized as one of Australia's greatest nineteenth-century landscape painters. By the early 1860s von Guerard was recognised as the foremost landscape artist in the colonies, touring Southeast Australia and New Zealand in pursuit of the sublime and the picturesque. He is most known for the wilderness paintings produced during this time, which are remarkable for their shadowy lighting and fastidious detail. The scientific accuracy of such work has led to a reassessment of von Guerard's approach to wilderness painting, and some historians believe it likely that the landscapist was strongly influenced by the environmental theories of the leading scientist Alexander von Humboldt. He was one of a number of influential German-speaking residents who brought their "epistemic traditions" to Australia, and not only became "deeply entangled with the Australian colonial project", but also were "intricately involved in imagining, knowing and shaping colonial Australia" (Barrett, et al., 2018, p.2).
