Striking vintage double-sided hand-painted lobby art advertisements for film screenings in Delaware in 1934, at the Palace Theatre of Seaford and the Sussex Theatre of Georgetown, both in Delaware. One side created for the Palace during the week of March 19-24, advertising the films "Fugitive Lovers," "Design for Living," "Roman… Scandals," and "Long Lost Father." The other side created for the Sussex during the week of April 9-14, advertising the films "This Side of Heaven," "It Happened One Night," "Carolina," "and "His Double Life." 14 x 22 inches. An outstanding example of (presumably) amateur political protest art, depicting the House Un-American Activities Committee as a rabid King Kong on the verge of seizing the helpless damsel Civil Liberties. 1959 was the Committee's 21st year of existence, and it had by then become quite commonplace to condemn t…he HUAC's extremism, so much so that President Truman, in April of that year, called the committee "the most un-American thing in the country today." Still, it would take sixteen more years for HUAC to be officially abolished. We've been unable to trace the artist, but he (again, we presume) was clearly skilled, striking just the right balance between cartoon and editorial styles. A vivid piece of vernacular propaganda from the early days of the HUAC's decline. Light-brown paper hand-drawn in felt-tip marker; 24" by 18" approx. Evidence of having been hung up at corners: small pieces of tape at upper edge; two chips at bottom; plus 2" tear at center of bottom edge. Shallow creases (folded into eighths). Else clean, if mildly toned. Very good. Signed by an artist ("Vid") and dated in July 1959.

Moderate toning, light creasing or edgewear, small holes…in places without loss to legibility. Overall, 25 rare items in good condition. $25,000. * Hastily written, cheaply printed and sold in their thousands on street corners or at executions throughout the nineteenth century, English crime and execution broadsides are important examples of the development of modern print culture and provide interesting insights for the social historian of today. The broadsides in this collection represent the only known copies, with no others recorded on OCLC, Library Hub or in institutional collections such as those at Harvard or the British Library. They provide grisly accounts of murder, necrophilia, rape, domestic abuse, infanticide and labor unrest. The executions they document were solemn and uneventful, or carried out by celebrity executioners, or, in one case, never happened at all. Some include elaborate woodcuts or verses. Others are simple columns of hastily struck type. All provide a unique picture of criminal justice in England from the days of the Bloody Code to the reforms of the Victorian era. 3 broadsides (190 x 300; 210 x 310; 210 x 310 mm); some light creases and marginal fraying with a small hole at the top edge of one where the paper is thin, the smallest of the three of poorer paper quality (correspondingly speckled and toned), but the others particularly bright, and all are clear and legible . Three late eighte…enth-century Sicilian proclamations, two referring to escaped convicts, the other to a proscription of gambling. The six escaped convicts are here named and physically described - catlike eyes, beard of the Nazarene, etc. - with the aim that they be captured and transferred to the main prison in Palermo. The notice regarding the prohibition of games accompanied printed copies of the proclamation proper, and gives notice that the decree should be displayed in a prominent place. Sicily was at this time ruled by House of Bourbon, who, like the Spanish, Dukes of Savoy and Austrians before, ruled via a viceroy in Palermo. Directives radiated from the island's administrative centre, even as they pertained to local matters in somewhere like Syracuse, in the far south east. The two proclamations from 1779 are printed under the auspices of Filadelfo Artale (b.1716), highly esteemed judge of the Praetorian Court. See: M. This song is listed as the third item on the program. The dedication was noted in the Deseret News of February 16, 1897 "The New Central School House was dedicated last Tuesday. About five hundred pupils were in attendance from the second to the eighth grade, inclusive. The Central school house is situated three blocks east of the Co-op store, and is a credit to the people of Spanish Fork. It is all complete with the exception of hanging the bell, which has not yet arrived." Both items previously unrecorded. Scarce.

[Apia, Western Samoa: S.n., 1914-1917]. 43 broadsides and broadsheets (Proclamation No. 40 present in duplicate) ranging… in size from 12-3/4" x 9-1/4" to 17" x 10-3/4" (folded, 17" x 22" unfolded), text in English, Samoan and German with some broadsides printed in all three languages. Light toning, horizontal fold lines to most items, light edgewear and soiling to a few items, holes and small tears along fold line to Proclamation No. 15 affecting text with minor loss to legibility, small ink stamp to upper right corner of second copy of Proclamation No. 40. $3,750. * A collection of 42 proclamations issued during the British military occupation of German Samoa during World War I, most signed in type by Colonel Robert Logan in his capacity as the military administrator of the colony. New Zealand's Samoa Expeditionary Force landed in August of 1914 and the colony remained under military administration until 1919. This was New Zealand's first military action in World War I; Samoa would remain under New Zealand's governance until independence in 1962. The proclamations deal with a wide range of matters, including the announcement of the occupation, restrictions on imports and exports, the supply of liquor to Samoan natives, the administration of local legal institutions and the treatment of Chinese indentured laborers. These broadsides are rare, with OCLC generally locating fewer than 5 copies worldwide and no copies of any in North America. 43 broadsides and broadsheets (illustrator).
