Internally very good and free of inscriptions; hand coloured map as frontispiece and illustrated with 15 engravings; binding sound; variable foxing mainly to plate margins but hardly any to text; all edges marbled; 322pp + end papers [index, bibliography, corrections etc]. A very crisp copy of a scarce item.

First edition, 4to (245 x 165 mm), [6], ii, [2], 202pp., with additional engraved title page, 48 fine steel engraved plates on india paper, with tissue guards, occasional light foxing, original red cloth, neatly rebacked with original spine and black gilt lettered label, uncut. Nicely produced steel engravings, mostly of country houses, with armorials and titles to plates. Provenance: Ownership signature of Maria & Emma Codrington (1846) to title page, with their bookplate, and their house Dodington, is marked in the index. Cooper I, 10.

Norris, the 'principal seats of nobility and gentry' are engraved and described, with locations including Gatcombe Park, Highgrove, Prinknash Abbey, and Chavenage House depicted.Published in twelve parts, the front wrap of the first part is bound in to the front of the work, with the rear wrap bound in to the rear.A faint pencil inscription from H.
