He left a place known as America's Cleanest City, America's Quietest City, the capital of Mississippi, and the safest city in the South. To Crump's critics, Memphis was also known as America's least democratic city. Crump's brand of order was already breaking down at the time of his death. That year the U.S. Supreme Court desegregated public schools in Brown v. Board of Education and Elvis Presley cut his first record at Sun Studio in Memphis. The pair features a monochrome frontispiece to volume one, with the original tissue guard. The set features a total of nineteen monochrome plates throughout in addition to monochrome vignettes. By English botanist, gardener and orchidologist John Lindley, who was Assistant Secretary to the Horticultural Society, and British gardener and botanist Thomas Moore: an expert on British ferns and fern allies, who was curator of the Society of Apothecaries Garden between 1848-1887. With the bookplate and private library notation of Bertram F. Barton to the front pastedown. Illustrated with a frontispiece of Hampton Court Palace, four full page maps of the river and over one hundred vignette woodcut illustrations. Collated complete. John Fisher Murray was an Irish poet and humourist, perhaps best known for his satirical works. He did however write a number of works regarding London, notably 'The World of London'. This volume describes the area surrounding the river Thames, and includes descriptions of Kensington, Richmond and Hampton Court, to name a few. In the original red cloth binding with gilt motif to front board. Externally smart with slight rubbing to the boards and extremities. Slight splitting to the head and tail of the spine. Robert Branston war ein herausragender britischer Holzstecher, der maßgeblich zur Entwicklung der Holzschnittkunst in England beitrug. Er war bekannt für seine präzisen und detailreichen Buchillustrationen, insbesondere nach Vorlagen von Künstlern wie John Thurston. Branston spezialisierte sich auf die Darstellung von Innenräumen und menschlichen Figuren, während er in der Darstellung von Landschaften weniger erfolgreich war. Sein Stil war geprägt von klaren Linien und einer sorgfältigen Schattierung, die seinen Werken Tiefe und Realismus verlieh. John Massey Wright war ein britischer Maler und Illustrator, der vor allem für seine Aquarelle und Buchillustrationen bekannt war.
