A psychological thriller about a domestic servant -- a "household drudge" in the employ of "a strange family in a Clapham flat -- who listens" (and learns, perhaps more than is good for her). "The story is that of Deborah Claw [great name!], who saved one murderer from the gallows by perjuring herself, and who, by telling the truth, came herself under that grim shadow." The entire story, it might be noted, takes place over the course of a single afternoon, in the kitchen of the aforementioned flat, about which the New York Times critic commented: "Seldom have the restrictions of the dramatic unities been employed so effectively to intensify an essentially dramatic situation."
