In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, limited to 550 numbered copies designed, produced and published by Christopher Sandford in Caslon's Old Face type and printed on mould-made paper (this being #227, and hence one of 475 copies in a 'standard' binding). Folio. 266pp. Original Sangorski & Sutcliffe-bound re…ddish-brown morocco with cream buckram sides, lettered in gold at the spine and with a gilt-stamped ornate decoration to the upper board. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. With a superb double-spread title page wood-engraved decoration, two maps, and sixteen full-page plates of engravings, all contributed by Dorothea Braby (work which took her eighteen months to complete). The buckram very slightly soiled, and the whole slightly bowed. A very good copy of a quite magnificent production, this new translation of the eleven 'Mabinogion' stories being widely praised for its combination of literal accuracy and elegant literary style, and immediately supplanting Lady Charlotte Guests' oft cited prior translation. Laid-in is a Golden Cockerel Press-produced one-page flyer, quite lightly creased, quoting reviews of two of their recent publications, including this present volume. Dorothea Braby. (illustrator).

[modest shelfwear, light staining/foxing to top of text block; the jacket has suffered paper loss at both ends of spine (missing about 1-1/2" at bottom) and at several corners, with a small piece torn away at the upper left corner of the front panel, and what remain…s of the spine has been torn and internally tape-repaired]. A psychological thriller about a domestic servant -- a "household drudge" in the employ of "a strange family in a Clapham flat -- who listens" (and learns, perhaps more than is good for her). "The story is that of Deborah Claw [great name!], who saved one murderer from the gallows by perjuring herself, and who, by telling the truth, came herself under that grim shadow." The entire story, it might be noted, takes place over the course of a single afternoon, in the kitchen of the aforementioned flat, about which the New York Times critic commented: "Seldom have the restrictions of the dramatic unities been employed so effectively to intensify an essentially dramatic situation." Another contemporary critic opined that "the book gets its grip upon the reader in its opening paragraphs, and the grip never slackens until the last page is reached." I've found evidence of only one other book by "Massicks Sparroy" (which OCLC tags as a pseudonym), "The Leper's Bell," published in 1921. Illustrated by (dj) Dorothea Braby (illustrator).
