Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair dj. Illustrated by (dj) Dorothea Braby (illustrator). First American Edition. [modest shelfwear, light staining/foxing to top of text block; the jacket has suffered paper loss at both ends of spine (missing about 1-1/2" at bottom) and at several corners, with a small piece torn away at the upper left corner of the front panel, and what remains of the spine has been torn and internally tape-repaired]. A psychological thriller about a domestic servant -- a "household drudge" in the employ of "a strange family in a Clapham flat -- who listens" (and learns, perhaps more than is good for her). "The story is that of Deborah Claw [great name!], who saved one murderer from the gallows by perjuring herself, and who, by telling the truth, came herself under that grim shadow." The entire story, it might be noted, takes place over the course of a single afternoon, in the kitchen of the aforementioned flat, about which the New York Times critic commented: "Seldom have the restrictions of the dramatic unities been employed so effectively to intensify an essentially dramatic situation." Another contemporary critic opined that "the book gets its grip upon the reader in its opening paragraphs, and the grip never slackens until the last page is reached." I've found evidence of only one other book by "Massicks Sparroy" (which OCLC tags as a pseudonym), "The Leper's Bell," published in 1921.
