The 4th volume of the "Spectacle of Nature," a popular work on natural history by Noël-Antoine Pluche (1688-1761), a French priest and scientist; this (second?) edition comprises 8 parts in 9 volumes. This volume deals with astronomy, light, colours, shadow, fire, history of experimental physics (including geographical discoveries) and history of theoretical physics. The book contains an engraved frontispiece by Jacques-Philippe Le Bas (1707-1783) and 28 plates and maps (e.g., solar and lunar eclipses, constellations, world map, Egyptian gods, map of Phoenician colonies, map of ancient Greece, Ptolemy world map, armillary sphere, maps of the Mediterranean Sea, Scandinavia, America and Asia, thermometers, movement of the planets); almost all of these copper engravings were made by Pierre Bourgoin; the engraving of thermometers was made by Jacques-Philippe Le Bas. Antiqua typeface; pages are decorated with headpieces and tailpieces.
