In den WarenkorbThe 4th volume of the "Spectacle of Nature," a popular work on natural history by Noël-Antoine Pluche (1688-1761), a French priest and scientist; this (second?) edition comprises 8 parts in 9 volumes. This volume deals with astronomy, light, colours, shadow, fire, history of experimental physics (including geographical discoveri…es) and history of theoretical physics. The book contains an engraved frontispiece by Jacques-Philippe Le Bas (1707-1783) and 28 plates and maps (e.g., solar and lunar eclipses, constellations, world map, Egyptian gods, map of Phoenician colonies, map of ancient Greece, Ptolemy world map, armillary sphere, maps of the Mediterranean Sea, Scandinavia, America and Asia, thermometers, movement of the planets); almost all of these copper engravings were made by Pierre Bourgoin; the engraving of thermometers was made by Jacques-Philippe Le Bas. Antiqua typeface; pages are decorated with headpieces and tailpieces. A complete copy. /// Leather binding with gilt ornament and marbled endpapers; hardback, 621+[1] pp., 29 plates and maps, 12° (10.5 x 17 cm), leather worn, chipped and rubbed, corners slightly bumped, endpapers faded, front endpaper partly peeled off from board, back free endpaper has creases and small tear, frontispiece slightly chipped along fore edge, one plate worn and darkened along fore edge, one plate has pale water stain along bottom edge, several leaves are darkened along fore edge, one double-leaf detached, one leaf incorrectly cropped (text not corrupted), other pages clean, only rarely with minor creases, small pale stain, trace of dust or tiny tear, condition: good Book Language/s: French.
