Jorge Bolet erhielt im Alter von 12 Jahren ein Stipendium am Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, wo er bei David Saperton und Leopold Godowsky Klavier sowie bei Fritz Reiner Dirigieren studierte. Nach einer kurzen Weiterbildung bei Moriz Rosenthal in Europa und einem kurzen Studium bei Rudolf Serkin am Curtis Institute gewann er den Naumburg Award.Seine Karriere begann wechselhaft, da seine Technik in den 1940er und 1950er Jahren von der US-Kritik abgelehnt wurde. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs arbeitete er als Kulturattaché in Washington und wurde später musikalischer Direktor in Tokio, wo er die Erstaufführung der Operette The Mikado dirigierte.Nach dem Krieg vervollkommnete er seine Studien bei Abram Chasins und nahm an Schallplattenaufnahmen teil, darunter das wiederentdeckte zweite Klavierkonzert von Sergej Prokofjew. Sein Durchbruch kam 1974 mit einem Recital in der Carnegie Hall. Von 1968 bis 1977 war er Professor an der Indiana School of Music und wurde später Nachfolger von Rudolf Serkin am Curtis Institute of Music. Ab 1977 hatte er seinen ersten großen Plattenvertrag bei Decca/London.
