Vintage publicity photograph of Walter Brennan from the 1937 film, with a Universal Pictures stamp crediting photographer Ray Jones, and a mimeo snipe on the verso, here under the working title "Blonde Dynamite." From the archive of noted Hollywood still photographer Ray Jones. Born in Wisconsin on January 1, 1901, Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s, and went on to be the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures in 1935, where he worked well into the 1950s. Tala Birell stars as a detective working undercover as a jewel thief to bring down Cesar Romero and his gang of bond thieves. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine.

Three vintage double weight publicity photographs of actress Tala Birell, circa 1930s. Annotation in manuscript ink on the versos. From the collection of artist and author Duncan Hannah. Duncan Hannah was a key figure in the burgeoning New York underground arts scene, befriending Andy Warhol and his superstars, Lou Reed, Allen Ginsberg, Patti Smith, Salvador Dali, and many others. A graduate of the Parsons School of Design, his paintings were exhibited in the influential 1980 Times Square Show alongside work by Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and several of his paintings are held in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Romanian-born stage and film actress Tala Birell gained fame in Europe as a stage actress, and enjoyed several smaller roles in Hollywood in the 1930s and 1940s. She is perhaps best remembered today for her performance in "Crime and Punishment" (1935). 8 x 10 inches. Two Very Good plus, lightly edgeworn, one Good, with a light tide mark on the bottom right corner and creasing along the left edge.

One of Josef von Sternberg's most distinctive films, and his first with Columbia Pictures, based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's classic 1866 novel, starring Lorre as anguished murderer Raskolnikov. 10 x 8 inches. Nine with printed mimeo snipes on the verso, and all with provenance labels and stamps to same. Of particular note is an image of actors Marian Marsh and Edward Arnold on the set, as well as multiple striking images of Peter Lorre in close-up.
