In den WarenkorbFourth Edition. Large folding double sided single sheet printed on both sides, folded in 12 panels. One side features a handsome colour birds-eye view of Shinkyo with a photographic panorama showing construction in progress immediately below, on the reverse a coloured plan, text and black and white photographic illustrations. 54.5 x 78cm. A little minor wear and occasional browning, a very good copy. This striking large coloured bird's-eye view of the city of Shinkyo, the Chinese city known today as Changchun, was published in this pamphlet, explaining the first "five-year" stage of the project for the planning of Shinkyo. Shinkyo was established by the Japanese in the first part of the 20th century, the area having been chosen for its strategic importance. It became a city in 1932. The Emperor Puyi lived there until the end of World War II. This attractive birds-eye view of the planned city shows Shinkyo's broad streets, trees and attractive buildings. The planning of Shikyo was influenced by the changes that had been made to 19th century Paris, by contemporary American town planning and the Garden City Movement. Today Changchun is a city of over 7 million people, the capital of China's Jilin Province and known for its car manufacturing. On the reverse of the map, two panels upper right section showing a photograph titled ?????????[Kokuto kensetsu no zenb? ] accompanying an overview of the planning of Shinkyo and the purpose of the city. Two panels in the upper middle section on reverse of the birds-eye view show a coloured plan of the future Shinkyo. It shows the city located within the nearby region and indicates government, residential, and industrial areas, the race course, airport, railway lines, parks etc. A comprehensive list of names of parks, avenues, plazas and roads is also provided along with the map. The other eight panels are a report of plans for the city, covering information on the development of infrastructure, constructions and highlights in the first five-year project, financing for the construction and more. It is clear from the text and the images that this brochure was published to commend Shinkyo to readers as a city with a bright future - a city of economic and cultural importance - with the intention of attracting industry and people.…

In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Good. Wear along original fold lines. Verso repairs to fold separations. Old tape repairs on verso. Highway map of California on verso. Size 16.5 x 38 Inches. This is a c. 1936 Charles Hamilton Owens bird's eye view of California. This map was promoted and distributed by the All-Year-Club to promote California tourism. A Closer Look Coverage looks east on California, embracing from Grants Pass, Oregon to Phoenix, Arizona and Tijuana, Mexico and from Salt Lake City, Utah to the Pacific Ocean. Cities and towns throughout are labeled, among them Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas, Yuma, and Flagstaff. The transportation network is highlighted, with major highways and railway lines labeled. The Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, Western Pacific, and Santa Fe Railroads are among the labeled railroads. Several national parks, including Yosemite, Sequoia, and Redwood in California, Crater Lake in Oregon, and the Grand Canyon in Arizona appear as well. Both Mount Whitney (the highest point in the United States at the time) and Death Valley (the lowest point) are labeled. Famous landmarks, such as the Golden Gate Bridge, the Oakland Bay Bridge, the Rose Bowl, and the California State Capital Building are all drawn in profile. Verso content features a more traditional map and highlights points of interest to tourism. There also, is a welcome message from Frank F. Merriam, Governor of California from 1934 - 1939. The All-Year Club of Southern California By the 1910s, Southern California was already a winter destination, a haven for easterners keen to escape New England winters. By the early 1920s, businessmen realized tourism need not be seasonal; Southern California's 'amazing' weather could draw visitors year-round. In 1921, a group of nineteen Southern California businessmen, led by Harry Chandler (publisher of the Los Angeles Times ), created the All-Year Club of Southern California as a spin-off of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. The club lobbied the county Board of Supervisors for funding to sell southern California as a summer resort. The push began in Texas, Arizona, and Oklahoma, where residents would see L.A.'s ninety degrees days with low humidity as relief from the sweltering Midwestern summer. That year, a single large resort reported a daily increase of 100 visitors. Likewise, the Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, and Union Pacific railroads reported record ticket sales during the summer of 1921. These early successes were proof of concept for the All-Year Club, and so it expanded promotion. Numbers continued to rise, as did the Club's budget, and by 1926 the All-Year Club was spending $450,000 on advertising and promotional material. However, not everything was positive. Even though SoCal was booming, ads only wanted tourists, not job-seekers. The ads stated categorically that tourists were welcome, but job-seekers were not, since they would not be able to find work. Nonetheless, the hopeful unemployed came, leading to an ongoing population boom. The All-Year Club of Southern California operated under that name until 1968, when it became the Greater Los Angeles Visitors and Convention Bureau, which later merged with the Southern California Visitors Council. Until 2012, the organization had been known as LA Inc., and today it is the Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board. Publication History and Census This map was drawn by Charles Hamilton Owens and published by the All-Year Club of Southern California in 1936.…

In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Very good. Minor closed and repaired tear, right margin, not extending into image. A few reinforcement points on verso where paper is thin. Size 15 x 27 Inches. This is a rare c. 1913 Richard Rummell bird's-eye view of Dartmouth College, New Hampshire. The view looks northeast on Dartmouth from the intersection of Main Street and Wheellock. The Dartmouth Green with its distinctive path structure takes center stage. Dartmouth Hall (1906), with its iconic bell tower, appears at right. Just to the left, Webster Hall (1907), with its colonnaded entrance, is recognizable. The Collis Center (1902) appears in the lower left. Rummell University Views Rummell was an American landscape artist known for his drawings of American universities. At the turn of the century, Littig and Company commissioned Rummell to prepare watercolors of some of the nation's most prestigious colleges. From these watercolors, copperplates were engraved, and a limited number of engravings were issued. Most of Rummell's university views are strikingly similar in style, revealing the entire campus in panoramic splendor. The views are uniformly issued from an altitude of about 300 feet, suggesting the Rummell most likely worked from a balloon. Rummell views appear in full-size, half-size, and quarter-size, both colored and uncolored. Typically, the uncolored sepia-toned images bearing Rummell's pencil signature and the Littig imprint are considered the first editions, but not all his college views are known thus. Some of the views were acquired from Littig and reissued. It is also possible to find proof states lacking the name of the college below the image. Publication History and Census This view was originally published as a photogravure print by A. W. Elston of Boston and W. T Littig in 1906. The present example removes the Littig imprint, adds color, the Rummell signature in the lower right, and a vignette of Dartmouth Hall (1906) in the lower left. We also note a later reprint by Victorious and Cody, c. 1946. The present example, although undated, was most likely printed around 1913. Dartmouth represents one of the scarcer Rummell views, and this issue has no recorded market history. We note multiple examples in the Dartmouth College collections but none elsewhere. Size 8.5 x 32 Inches. This is an extremely attractive c. 1910 panorama of the Niagara Falls by the Gies Company. This bird's-eye view map depicts the Niagara Gorge and the Great Gorge Route or the Niagara Belt Line. Important monuments are illustrated: Brock's Monument, Whirlpool Rapids, Devil's Hole, Niagara Falls, and Table Rock, among others. The route of the Niagara Belt Line is highlighted with orange trolley cars. History of the Trolley Line In 1895, the International Railway Company founded The Great Gorge Route scenic attraction, an electric trolley belt line that surrounded the Niagara Gorge. Both the Canadian and American routes are depicted here. In Canada, the route ran from Niagara Falls to Queenston, while the American route ran from Niagara Falls to Lewiston. Considered one of the most scenic routes in the world, visitors riding the belt line could witness exceptional views of the whirlpool rapids, Devil's Hole, the Narrows, and the Giant Rock. The route was closed in 1935 following the Great Depression. Today, visitors can hike the Niagara Gorge Trail, which follows the abandoned track. The verso includes detailed information and photographs about the belt line and the falls. Production History This map was issued by The Gies Company, Buffalo, c. 1910.…

In den WarenkorbGood. Mend at one fold entering image with no loss, else very good. Size 8.5 x 13.5 Inches. This is Pieter van der Aa's 1723 bird's eye view of Luzern (Lucerne), Switzerland. The city is viewed from the south, at the mouth of the Reuss River at the west end of Lake Lucerne. The town's unique array of bridges made this a favorite perspective. Matthas Merian had chosen it in 1642, and Van der Aa has copied it faithfully down to the elaborate city coat of arms in the lower right. Publication History and Census Leiden publisher Pieter van der Aa engraved this plate in 1723 for inclusion in Johann Jakob Scheuchzer's Ouresiphoites Helveticus , a record of that Swiss scholar and herbalist's journeys in the Swiss Alps. The book is well represented in institutional collections, although the plate in question appears to be scarce on the market. References: OCLC 1283436422.…

In den WarenkorbGood. Central fold line slightly visible. Offsetting in blank spaces. Dampstain at bottom-center in margin. Size 19.25 x 14 Inches. This is a c. 1930 bird's-eye panoramic view of the Meiji Shrine (Meiji Jing?) in Tokyo, published by the Meiji Jingu? Shamusho, the office tasked with managing the shrine. The shine has played an important historical role in Japanese national identity, especially in the years between its completion and the end of World War II. A Closer Look This view faces towards the northwest with Harajuku Station in the foreground at left (the rail line is illustrated but the station not indicated), the shrine itself at center, and the Treasure Hall containing many of the personal effects of the emperor at top-right. The legend at bottom provides numbers corresponding to various structures within the shrine complex. The inset at top contains an overhead map of the area, including the outer section ( Gaien , ??) of the shrine and surrounding sites, such as Shinanomachi Station (??????), the Army Academy (?????), and the Gakushuin Women's College (??????). The Meiji Shrine The Meiji Jing? houses the deified spirits ( kami ) of the Meiji Emperor and his wife, Empress Sh?ken. The Meiji Emperor died in July 1912 as sovereign of a very different country than the one he ruled when he ascended to the throne in 1868. Japan had become a modern country during his reign, and immediately after his death efforts began to build a suitably magnificent shrine to the consequential monarch. Funding and materials for the shrine came from every corner of Japan and more than 100,000 young people were mobilized as laborers for the project, which became a matter of critical national importance. The main inner section ( Naien , ??) of the shrine complex opened to the public on November 1, 1920, to a crowd of some 500,000 worshippers. The outer section ( Gaien ) including the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery (???), the Constitution Memorial Hall (?????), and numerous sports facilities (to honor the youth who built the complex) was opened in October 1926, after a significant delay due to the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. The sports facilities were used for the 1930 Far Eastern Championship Games, a forerunner to today's Asian Games. State Shinto and Nationalism The Meiji Shrine is an appropriate memorial to the Meiji Emperor, since one of the first major tasks of the Meiji Restoration was the creation of the State Shinto system. This process centralized thousands of local shrines and religious practices, cut off their existing means of finance, put them under a single priesthood structure, and placed the imperial family at the center of worship, turning folk religious practice into a vehicle for building national identity and nationalism. There was often local opposition to these measures, but they were forced through, nonetheless. In the following decades, many thousands of shrines closed or consolidated and those that survived increasingly became little more than boosters for Japanese imperialism. Major reforms during the American occupation severed the ties between Shinto and the state, but the shrines and folk religious practices eliminated in the Meiji era could not easily be revived, and some remnants of the imperial era survive, such as the commemoration of war dead (including war criminals) at Shinto shrines, in particular the controversial Yasukuni Shrine. As for the Meiji Shrine, unsurprisingly it immediately became an important site in State Shinto, one of the Kanpei-taisha (????), the first rank of State Shinto shrines. It was destroyed by American bombs in World War II and rebuilt in the 1950s. An impressive new museum was opened not far from the train station in 2019 to commemorate the centenary of the construction of the Meiji Shrine. The Meiji Shrine is located in Shibuya, then the edge of the city but now well within the built-up urban area of Tokyo. In its postwar iteration, the shrine has been a popular site for locals.…

In den WarenkorbGood. Wear along original fold lines. Verso repairs to fold separations and at fold intersections. Small area of infill at a fold intersection. Text on verso. Size 17.75 x 31 Inches. This is a 1934 Gerald A. Eddy bird's-eye view perspective map of Hoover (Boulder) Dam, Lake Mead, and environs at the height of its construction. Hoover (Boulder) Dam appears in the lower-left next to Boulder City, explicitly founded to house the thousands of workers involved in construction. Lake Mead dominates the foreground, and the view stretches hundreds of miles north to Salt Lake City, Utah. This was published as a promotional piece for Union Pacific Railroad, and thus a red line traces the railroad's route south from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas and on to Boulder City and the construction site. The Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, and Cedar Breaks National Monument are highlighted, no doubt in the hopes of driving tourism despite the Great Depressing. The region's mountain ranges, canyons, and other natural wonders are also identified. Hoover Dam Hoover Dam, built on the Nevada-Arizona border, is a concrete arch-gravity dam in Black Canyon on the Colorado River. It was built between 1931 and 1936 and thousands of people. Over 3,000 individuals were on the payroll when construction began, and the workforce hit its peak in July 1934, with 5,251 people on site. Over one hundred people died during construction. Hoover Dam forms Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States. The dam generates electricity for millions of people in Nevada, Arizona, and California. Naming Controversy When people began lobbying for the dam's construction in 1928, the press referred to it as the 'Boulder Dam' or the 'Boulder Canyon Dam,' even though the proposed site was in Black Canyon. On September 17, 1930, Secretary of the Interior Ray Wilbur spoke at the ceremony celebrating the beginning of the construction of the railway between the dam site and Las Vegas. During his speech, Wilbur referred to the dam as 'Hoover Dam' and cited a tradition of naming dams after presidents (never mind that one had never been named after a sitting president). After Hoover lost his reelection bid in 1932, the new Secretary of the Interior, Harold L. Ickes, began vehemently campaigning against the name Hoover Dam. He would only refer to it as Boulder Dam, even going so far as to state, incorrectly, that Congress had never formally used that name. The naming controversy continued, with average Americans using the names interchangeably until 1947, when Congress sanctioned 'Hoover Dam'. Intriguingly, this naming controversy extends to the present map, with an earlier state (Geog: hooverdambirdseye-eddy-1931), issued in 1931, using the name Hoover Dam instead of Boulder Dam, as here. Publication History and Census This map was drawn by Gerald A. Eddy and published by R. B. Robertson for the Union Pacific system in 1934. An earlier 1931 edition, bears the name 'Hoover Dam'. The present 1934 edition is rarer than the 1931 edition, as the 1934 edition is not cataloged in OCLC and appears infrequently on the market.…

Eddy bird's-eye view map of Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, Las Vegas, and environs, produced in 1958 for the Union Pacific Railroad. It captures the region at the height of the Atomic Age, when Las Vegas became a tourist haven and nearby parts of Nevada became testing grounds for nuclear weapons. A Closer Look Hoover Dam appears in the lower-left next to Boulder City, founded to house the thousands of workers involved in the dam's construction. Lake Mead dominates the foreground, and the view stretches hundreds of miles north to Salt Lake City, Utah. At left in the foreground, Las Vegas is detailed, with casinos, hotels, and the Union Pacific station labeled. This view went through several editions (see 'Publication History and Census' below), with the present edition being notable for the increased detail in Las Vegas and for including a mushroom cloud at Yuca Flats, the Atomic Energy Commission Testing Grounds northwest of Las Vegas. This view was published as a promotional piece for Union Pacific Railroad, and thus a red line traces the railroad's route south from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas and on to Boulder City. The Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Cedar Breaks National Monument, and, at far left, Death Valley, are highlighted. The region's mountain ranges, canyons, and other natural wonders are also identified. Over one hundred people died during construction. Hoover Dam forms Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States. The dam generates electricity for millions of people in Nevada, Arizona, and California, and, when water levels are sufficient, Lake Mead provides for a wide range of maritime recreation activities. Publication History and Census This map was drawn by Gerald A. Eddy and published by the Union Pacific Railroad in 1958. Multiple editions of this view were published between 1931 and 1962, with details changed accordingly, such as the name of the Dam (Boulder or Hoover), the development of highways, and the postwar growth of Las Vegas. That being said, the present edition does not appear in the OCLC. References: Rumsey 8608.000 (1961 ed.).…

In den WarenkorbVery good. Exhibits light wear along original fold lines. Laid down on archival tissue. Size 19.5 x 16.5 Inches. This is a c. 1917 chromolithograph map and view of Boston Harbor from Boston to Provincetown published by Union News. In the late 19th and early 20th century, such views were popular travel souvenirs sold at newsstands in train and ferry stations, as well as by newsboys onboard the trains and ferries themselves. A Closer Look Coverage embraces Cape Cod Bay, Quincy Bay, and Dorchester Bay, the cities of Boston, Dorchester, Plymouth, and Provincetown, among others. Islands in Boston Harbor are illustrated, including Moon Island, Spectacle Island, Long Island, Governor's Island. Ferry and steamboat routes are illustrated and labeled, with lines to Plymouth, Provincetown, and New York. Smoke rises from Boston's many manufactories. Today, such are construed as pollution and urban defilement, but when this view was printed busy smokestacks were indicative of commercial prosperity and industrial optimism. Chromolithography Chromolithography is a color lithographic technique developed in the mid-19th century. The process involved using multiple lithographic stones, one for each color, to yield a rich composite effect. Oftentimes, the process would start with a black basecoat upon which subsequent colors were layered. Some chromolithographs used 30 or more separate lithographic stones to achieve the desired effect. Chromolithograph color could also be effectively blended for even more dramatic results. The process became extremely popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when it emerged as the dominant method of color printing. The vivid color chromolithography produced made it exceptionally effective for advertising and propaganda imagery. Publication History and Census This map was published by the Union Publishing Company of South Station, Boston. An earlier edition was published by John Murphy.…

In den WarenkorbVery good. Light wear on original folds. Text on verso. Size 7 x 24 Inches. A scarce 1940 bird's eye view of Fukuoka, Japan drawn by Maeda K?ei, a disciple of Yoshida Hatsusabur?, a master of the genre. Though intended for tourists, it was produced in the context of total war and militarist nationalism, and draws on the city's history as a bulwark against foreign invasion, the site of the original kamikaze (divine wind) that saved Japan from the Mongols. A Closer Look Oriented towards the northwest, this view takes in modern Fukuoka, consisting of the historic port of Hakata at right and the relatively more recent (Edo period) town of Fukuoka at left, and its surroundings. Similar to his teacher Yoshida, Maeda emphasizes steam and electric railway lines, traced in red, with the Umi no Nakamichi (????) across a narrow isthmus at top being especially notable. He similarly follows Yoshida's style in using vertical boxes to label important sites, including Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples, mountains, parks, schools, government offices, train stations, neighborhoods, villages, and more. As a city with a long history as an important center for military power and trade, Fukuoka contains several important historical sites, especially shrines and temples. The large Hakozaki Shrine (???) is especially prominent at top-center towards right. Calligraphy at top-left refers to the kamikaze (??) that saved Fukuoka during two Mongol invasions in the 13th century, while a sunken Mongol ship can be seen in the harbor towards bottom-left. The verso contains text briefly introducing famous sites in the city, including parks, shrines, temples, schools (Kyushu Imperial University), and more. Information is also provided on festivals at shrines and temples at different times of the year and special attention is given to Hakata-ku (???), a historically important commercial district. Given Fukuoka's proximity to the sea and to Korea and China beyond, the port was home to early foreign traders, including what is considered to be Japan's first Chinatown. Finally, the verso text provides a list of tourist sites in and around Fukuoka with brief directions on how to get there, along with a description of distinctive local products. Wartime Intrusions This peaceful scene belies the context in which the map was produced, at the height of Japanese militarism and hypernationalism. By this time, Japan was already engaged in a full-scale war in China that was devolving into stalemate and was hurtling towards confrontation with Western powers, including the United States. Fukuoka holds a special place in the collective memory of Japan, especially as relates to foreign invasion. It was the site where two successive Mongol fleets in 1274 and 1281 were destroyed by storms in Hakata Bay. The second invasion fleet consisted of thousands of ships and hundreds of thousands of troops, constituting perhaps the largest amphibious landing force in history prior to the D-Day landings in 1944. It is no wonder that Japanese viewed the storms that saved them from this imposing force as a divine wind. Although at this point the term kamikaze had not come to refer to pilots who deliberately crashed their planes into American ships, the cult of emperor worship, self-sacrifice, and a highly idealized notion of samurai virtue had already become standard fare in Japanese public life. These values were tested in the latter stages of the war, as Fukuoka was firebombed by American planes in June 1945, resulting in more than 20% of the city being destroyed. Publication History and Census This view was published in April 1940 (Showa 15). It was drawn (?) by Maeda K?ei (????), edited by Kitazaki Yoshimi (????), and printed by Tamura Ichitar? (?????) of Keish? Publishers (?????). It was copyrighted to Kobayashi Yoshikazu (????) and distributed by the city government of Fukuoka (?????). Aside from Maeda, not much information is available about these other contributors to the view, though the.…

In den Warenkorb1st Edition. Very good. Size 15.5 x 22.25 Inches. An extraordinary 1968 / 1912 bird's-eye view perspective view and map of San Francisco, risen from the ashes of the 1906 earthquake and fire, ready to retake the world stage by hosting of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. This view was originally published in 1912, with the present example being a much reduced 198 restrike. A Closer Look The view looks westward on San Francisco from a fictional highpoint above today's San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge with California Street running dead center. The Embarcadero and docks appear in the foreground, while Golden Gate Park and the Pacific are recognizable in the distance. The Panama-Pacific Exposition, displayed here prospectively, appears at right, near the Golden Gate. Across the bay, in the distance, Mount Tamalpais, with a winding road ascending, is recognizable. The view presents a city fully recovered from a disaster that, just six years prior, destroyed eighty percent of the city. Cartographically the map is noteworthy as it illustrates and names nearly every single building - an astounding achievement and an invaluable record of San Francisco c. 1912. Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE) The Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE) was a world's fair held in San Francisco between February 20 and December 4, 1915. Ostensibly, the fair was intended to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal, but it was also an opportunity for San Francisco to showcase its remarkable recovery from the 1906 earthquake. The fair was constructed on a 635-acre site along the northern shore now known as the Marina District. It showcased American industry, progress, and prosperity. The exhibition's pièce de resistance was the 'Tower of Jewels', a 435-foot tower covered in glass Novagems illuminated by powerful searchlights. Little remains of the original fair grounds, except for the Palace of Fine Arts - although the current iteration matches the original, it was completely rebuilt in the 1960s to be more permanent and seismic-resistant. Publication History and Census This map was published in 1968 to promote the First Savings and Loan Association. This restrike is smaller than the first edition, bears additional promotional text, and the bay is colored a brighter shade of turquoise. It was originally produced on June 22, 1912, and was engraved and printed by the Pingree-Traung Company, of San Francisco, on behalf of the North American Press Association. While Pingree-Traung was a major printing concern, this map and a guide to several California cities seem to constitute the full corpus of the North American Press Association. It was prepared in anticipate of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (1915). Examples appear on both thin onion-skin paper and on heavier stock (per Rumsey). A second edition was published 2 days after the first on June 24, 1912, and is identifiable by the winding road to the summit of Mount Tamalpais, and names of buildings on the block bounded by First, Bryant, Brannon, and Beale streets. cf. Rumsey 10016.000) to promote the First Savings and Loan Association. The restrike can be identified by its smaller size, additional promotional text appearing below the title block, and evident (but printed) tears in the upper left corner that transferred from the example from which it was created, which is in the collection of the Society of California Pioneers. Of the present 1968 restrike edition, we note an example in the David Rumsey Map Collection. The restrike edition appears on the market from time to time. References: Rumsey 10016.000.…

This is an uncommon c. 1900 George H. Walker bird's-eye view map of Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. This is one of a series of view and maps published by Walker, among others, to serve the on-board and in-terminal newsstand market. The views were sold as souvenirs as well as practical guides to the journey. A Closer Look The view depicts the entirety of Narragansett Bay, from Point Judith to Providence, and extends eastward as far as Warren Point and Sakonnet. It identifies Newport, Conanicut Island, Prudence Island, Rhode Island, and various settlements along the bay's shoreline. Ferry routes crisscross the bay and lighthouses are illustrated in profile. Railroads appear as well, including the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad. Publication History and Census This map was produced by Boston map publisher George H. Walker and published c. 1900 by the Rhode Island News Co. of Providence, Rhode Island. Walker is better known for his similar view maps of Boston Harbor - the present example is thus somewhat out of his focus area and very scarce. In den WarenkorbGood. Exhibits wear along original fold lines. Verso repairs to fold separations. Exhibits minor loss at some fold intersections. Map of New York City Subway and supplemental text printed on verso. Size 24.25 x 17.5 Inches. This is a 1939 Edward V. Spofford bird's-eye view map of the 1939 New York World's Fair. Overlooking the fair from a fictional highpoint to the east, many of the fair's buildings are illustrated. The famous Trylon and Perisphere are immediately recognizable. 'Streets' throughout the fairground are identified, along with Constitution Mall and several 'courts'. Subway stations, bus parking areas, and the Long Island Rail Road station are also labeled. Outside the World's Fair, main thoroughfares and subway lines recognizable in Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan as far south as 34th Street and the Empire State Building. The Queens Midtown Tunnel is labeled as being under construction. Central Park, Rockefeller Center, and the Lincoln Tunnel are also identified. Verso Content A map of the New York Subway occupies three-quarters of the verso. The B.M.T. and the I.R.T. are differentiated and elevated and subterranean lines are separated out. An index split between the left and right borders lists museums, skyscrapers, stadiums, churches, beaches, amusement parks, and other points of interest. An advertisement for Second National Bank of Paterson in Paterson, New Jersey occupies the bottom quarter of the sheet. The map was provided compliments of the bank. Likely, this section of the map was reserved to promote any business that paid to distribute copies of the map before and during the fair. The 1939 - 1940 New York World's Fair The 1939 - 1940 New York World's Fair took place in Queens at Flushing Meadows - Corona Park. During its two exhibition seasons, over forty-four million people attended. It was also the second most expensive World's Fair in the United States, behind the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, Missouri. World War II began four months after the fair opened and many of the displays were affected, particularly those pavilions of countries under Axis occupation. After the fair closed in 1940, many of the European staff were unable to return home, so they stayed in the United States. Publication History and Census This map was drawn by Edward V. Spofford and published by C.S. Hammond and Company in 1939. It is well represented in institutional collections but scarce on the market. References: Rumsey 8806.003. OCLC 1243880975.…

In den WarenkorbVery good. Light wear along original fold lines. Closed margin tears professionally repaired on verso. Size 15.5 x 20.5 Inches. This is a 1948 Ed Pranger bird's-eye view cartoon map of the Yakima Valley, Washington. Yakima appears in the foreground encircled by a dashed line. Yakima's baseball stadium and the Central Washington Fair (marked by a man holding an ear of corn significantly taller than himself) appear in the vicinity. Outside Yakima, Pranger highlights hops grown near Moxee (emphasized by a man on a pogo stick). Comic illustrations of fishermen, boaters, and skiers emphasize the Yakima Valley as an exceptional destination for outdoor adventure. A ferocious elk stands with a hunter near the title, while Mt. Rainier looms above all. Grand Coulee Dam occupies the upper right, and Seattle appears along the horizon. A mileage chart provides distances from Yakima to places in Washington State and an inset offers geographical context. In den WarenkorbVery good. Slight wear at fold lines. Size 7 x 24.5 Inches. This is a very rare 1940 bird's-eye view sketch-book mailer map of Hakone National Park, Japan, issued for tourists. A Closer Look at the Map The map, legend, and text provide information of interest to tourists. These include major festivals and natural phenomena at various points in the year (????), chief amongst them the changing of leaves in the autumn and cherry blossoms in the spring. An inset at bottom also gives fishing information. Noted in the legend are hot springs, tourist attractions, railways, electric trams, and other transportation. The text in the margins indicates the direction of nearby islands and cities, including Tokyo. Verso Content The verso includes three inset maps showing the networks of the various train and tram lines around Hakone, terrain, the mountains of the park, a table showing information about hot springs, famous tourist and historical sites, procedures for a smooth visit (suggested itineraries), and additional information on fishing. Hakone and the National Park System in Japan The national park system in Japan was established when the National Parks Law was passed in 1931. Hakone was part of the first group of parks created. In 1936 Hakone Park merged with Fuji to create the Fuji-Hakone National Park. This later merged with the Izu Islands to create the current Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Due to their proximity to Tokyo and Yokohama, these parks have been popular since their inception with urbanites seeking a relaxing day or weekend in the countryside. Sketchbook Mailer Maps Sketchbook Mailers (????) were a style of bird's-eye view map that became very popular in Japan in the 1920s-1940s, often depicting cityscapes or country views from across Japan's growing empire. Each map was designed to be folded and packaged for safe and easy mailing and came with information about and photographs of the city on the verso, as is the case here. Although these maps are fascinating, beautiful, and educational, they also served a political function, informing Japanese audiences about the empire and providing a visual aid to understand places they would have read about frequently in the news. Publication History and Census This map was printed on December 15, 1940 and distributed on December 20, 1940. It was edited and distributed by Saukuragi Kuratarou (?????) and printed by Kanaya Matsudaira (????), both based in Tokyo. In den WarenkorbVery good. Light wear and minor verso reinforcement along original fold lines. Blank on verso. Size 22 x 27 Inches. This is a 1955 Don Mahn and Scen-o-tour pictorial bird's-eye view of Miami and Miami Beach, Florida. This is one of the few maps to show the proposed Inter-American Cultural and Trade Center. Looking northwest over the cities from above the Atlantic Ocean, icons, drawn with the correct perspective, dot the landscape and mark schools, churches, hospitals, and libraries. Forty-five other locations are numerically identified and correspond with a key situated along the bottom border. A legend, surrounded by a pictorial border, explains all the icons present and lists nearly a dozen local radio stations. In a charming addition, it also includes a diagram of how to 'properly' fold the map. Inter-American Cultural and Trade Center Inter-American Cultural and Trade Center was conceived in 1950 as a permanent theme park and trade show. The complex, to be located some 10 miles north of Miami, received congressional approval and was endorsed by the Harry S. Truman administration. The authority tasked with planning and construction, Interama, was created in 1951. The proposed center was to be opened in 1976 as a permanent international exposition providing cultural, educational, and trade activities combining the features of an amusement park, world's fair, and trade fair. It was heavily promoted throughout the 1950s as An endless show, combining a trade fair with a fun fair and including top-grade cultural events as well, is expected to open beside a palm-fringed lagoon in North Miami, Fla. It will be a permanent world's fair that its sponsors hope will dwarf the celebrated temporary world's fair at Chicago and New York during the Thirties. Despite considerable initial enthusiasm, the development lost momentum and, by 1975, the Interama project was abandoned. Publication History and Census This map was drawn by Don Mahn and published by the Scenotour Publishing Company of Miami, Florida in 1955. The present example is a variant published to promote Habersin Camera Shops, on Biscayne Boulevard. Habersin operated from 1954 to 1967. The only known institutional example is part of the Touchton Map Library at the Tampa Bay History Center. References: Tampa Bay History Center, Touchton Map Library, 2017.064.019.…

In den Warenkorb1st Edition. Good. Wear along original fold lines. Verso repairs to fold separations. Slight loss at 2 fold intersections. Size 27 x 17.5 Inches. This is a spectacular 1933 edition of the Edward V. Spofford / Samuel Freedman bird's-eye 'Supervue' map of New York City published to promote the Hotel Edison. Despite being issued at the height of the Great Depression, this view highlights New York City's resilience, prosperity, and multicultural dynamism. A Closer Look The view looks northwards on Manhattan from a presumptive point high above Governor's Island. Coverage stretches as far as Van Cortlandt Park, thus including much of the Bronx and parts of adjacent Queens, Brooklyn, and New Jersey. Red overprinting highlights the Hotel Edison, the Hotel Westbury, and 5 different routes out of the city. Important buildings appear in profile. Among them are bridges, the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, Grand Central Station, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and more. Neighborhoods are labeled, including Greenwich Village, Little Italy, Chelsea, the Financial District, and the Theatre District. This last area, the Theater District, is further detailed via an inset in the lower left, in which specific theaters are named. Along the Hudson, passenger piers are labeled according to the carrier that operated them: White Star, Red Star, Cunard, Hudson River Night Line, etc. An index appears to the right and below the view. The verso offers an array of city-focused facts and trivia, as well as pointers regarding sightseeing highlights. The Hotel Edison The Hotel Edison opened at 228 West 47th Street in New York City in 1931 and is still operational today. It was the first Art Deco hotel in the Theater District, and when it opened, it could accommodate 1,000 guests on 26 floors. The Hotel Edison has become a part of New York City's pop culture and operated a Broadway theater out of its ballroom on two separate occasions. Parts of the hotel have been featured in the TV shows 'Seinfeld' and 'Sex and the City', and the movies The Godfather and Birdman . Publication History and Census The view is the work of Edward V. Spofford, printed and published by Samuel Freedman. The present example is the 1933 edition. It is distinguishable from the first edition because it lacks Spofford's signature in the lower right. Freedman maintained the copyright throughout the view's print run. The present example was published in 1933, as can be seen on the verso. Multiple editions followed until about 1940, most on glossy paper and reasonably common. 11 examples of the Supervue are cataloged in OCLC, none of which appear to be the same as the present edition. In den WarenkorbVery good. Few marginal spots and mends away from printed image, else excellent. Size 8 x 12.5 Inches. This is Matthäus Merian's superbly detailed 1638 bird's-eye view of the city of Leipzig, under siege during the preliminaries to the 1631 Thirty Years' War Battle of Breitenfeld. Included in Merian's 1638 Archontologia cosmica sive imperiorum , its title suggests it was drawn closer to the battle itself and may have been separately issued closely on the heels of the fight. A Closer Look The walled city and its suburbs are vividly portrayed. 26 key structures - primarily churches and forts - are letter-keyed to a legend at the bottom of the view. Soldiers stream towards the fortifications and are met before the gates amid the smoke of musket-fire. Leipzig belonged to the Electorate of Saxony, which had sided with Sweden in the war against the Holy Roman Empire. It is the Imperial army, led by the Count of Tilly, besieging the city in this view. 1631 Siege of Liepzig The 1631 Siege of Leipzig occurred during the Thirty Years' War (1618 - 1648), a protracted conflict involving most of the great powers of Europe. The Swedish forces, led by King Gustavus Adolphus, laid siege to Leipzig, defended by forces loyal to the Holy Roman Empire. Despite fierce resistance, the Swedes ultimately captured the city after a relentless weeks-long bombardment. This victory was significant for Protestant forces and marked a turning point in the war. It weakened Habsburg regional hegemony and allowed Swedish forces to advance deeper into Central Europe. The Siege of Leipzig is notable not only for its strategic significance but also for the innovations in military tactics and weaponry employed by the Swedish forces, which would influence the conduct of warfare in the subsequent decades. Publication History and Census This view was created by Matthaus Merian and appeared in his 1638 Archontologia cosmica . It may have been intended for inclusion in his 1633 Theatrum Europaeum , but we do not see it in digitized examples of that work. Nine examples are listed in OCLC. References: OCLC 163855234.…
