Zustand: Good. - Signed "Prince William of Sweden" on a slip of paper which has been mounted on a gray autograph album page, 5-3/4 inches high by 4-1/4 inches wide, together with a portrait clipped from a newspaper. A cut-out coat of arms has been mounted to the right of the photo with a note by the previous owner penned below it. There is some light staining to the portrait and the cut signature probably from the glue used in the mounting. Good. Prince William of Sweden was an internationally known big game hunter, a writer of books on travel and exploration, novels and plays, a poet and a contributor to American magazines. In 1927 he toured America lecturing about his African adventures. His autograph was evidently obtained on this tour as indicated by the note penned on the album page: "Feb. 15,1927 at Buffalo Consistory. "Hunting big game in Pygmy Land.".

A knowledgeable and readable review, for the magazine 'African Affairs', beginning 'Thomas Leask was a modest elephant-hunter with a passion for scribbling. [.] he never seems quite to have got over his surprise at finding himself transplanted from his native Orkney to the land of the lordly Matabele and miserable Mashona. He was on friendly terms with that palsied tyrant, Moselekatse, and admired the unfortunate King Lobengula, who succeeded him. When Leask's hunting days were over, he settled down happily enough in Klerksdorp in the Transvaal as a storekeeper, became a burgher, and entertained President Kruger in his home.'.

Roosevelt, the son of President Theodore Roosevelt. (illustrator). First Edition. Octavo, xvii, 398pp. Maroon cloth, title stamped on spine. Stated "First Edition" on copyright page. Illustrated with numerous photographs, illustrated endpapers. Library of congress stamp on the front free endpaper, otherwise free of marks or notations. In the publisher's dust jacket, $15.00 on front flap, bright illustrations, a near fine example. Signed on the half title by the Chairman of the Boone and Crockett Club: "To Archibald B. Roosevelt / with compliments of the Records Committee. Robert S. Waters / Dec. 17, 1964." Archibald Roosevelt Sr. (1894-1979) was the fourth son of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt and Edith Kermit Roosevelt. A Harvard graduate, he served in both World Wars, earning recognition for bravery. In World War I, he was a captain in the U.S. Army, receiving the Silver Star for his actions in France despite being wounded. During World War II, he re-enlisted and served as a lieutenant colonel. Post-military, he pursued a career in business and finance, working for firms like American Express. Known for his outspoken political views, he opposed communism and became active in conservative political movements during the mid-20th century. Signed.

Original blue cloth with gilt lettering. Cloth discoloured and a bit stained, edges rubbed, margins partly foxed, else still a good copy. Please see description or ask for photos.

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. A group of 30 postcard-sized images, each captioned 'Compagnie Générale Transsaharienne : Chasses en Afrique Occidentale Franaise', many attributed to M. Hettier de Boislambert but one also to MM. Susset et Andieux, postally unused and in fine condition, contained in the original card envelope, which is a little worn.

The copy has been bought with Sotheran in London for 398 pounds. - Minor traces of use, spine a little faded, else nice, clean, decorative.

Zustand: Very good. - Octavo, 7 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide. Approximately 173 words penned on three of the four sides of a folded sheet of personalized letterhead. The letterhead from his family home of Brockhurst, Grange Road, Guernsey was used elsewhere as is indicated by the identification having a line crossed through it. Dugmore is most probably writing from France. He writes to the American lecture manager James B. Pond that "I am to return under the instructions of the comparatively new Ministry of Information as soon as I have gathered the material I want. This will include the results of a visit to the front both with the British & American forces in France, a probable visit to the Grand Fleet, visits to the largest munitions works & ship yards. So I hope to be ready to return in September. That is to say leaving here about the middle of that month. The plan to go to the west coast California etc. will be first rate.By the way I have been a Major since Feb 10th & never knew it till the other day." He signs in full, "Very truly yrs A Radclyffe Dugmore". In a postscript he writes: "Are you mentioning the African lecture for the west?". Pond has stamped the note:"ANS'D AUG 29 1918". A few words are slightly smudged and the letter is folded twice for mailing. Very good. The big game photographer and author Major Arthur Radclyffe Dugmore (1870-1952) was also an artist, illustrating some of his books and producing a series of prints of wildlife. He traveled extensively photographing and filming animals throughout the world and particularly in Africa. The author of "The Wonderland of Big Game", "The Romance of the Beaver", "Camera Adventures in the African Wilds", and "The Romance of the Newfoundland Caribou", among others, his films include "The Wonderland of Big Game". He was the subject of a 1931 Lowell Thomas biography "Rolling Stone: The Life and Adventures of Arthur Radclyffe Dugmore".At the beginning of World War 1 Dugmore went to the battle front and recorded his experiences. He wrote of them in his book "When the Somme Ran Red". Quoting from the dust jacket of the book: "This book was written during wartime by a gassed British infantry officer incapacitated and no longer fit for service in the trenches. Dugmore was an unusual soldier who would normally have been considered too old for front line duties from the outset. He was already well into middle age at the outbreak of hostilities having spent a career as a naturalist and sportsman and it was only due to influential friends that he managed to obtain a commission in an infantry regiment - the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Yet this was not his first experience of the Western Front. As the German Army swept into Belgium, the civilian Dugmore-armed only with a cine camera-travelled to the front as the small Belgian Army vainly attempted to stem the advance, to experience the war at first hand. His account of this early stage of the war makes unusual and fascinating reading. After joining the army, the author joined his regiment serving in the trenches during the period leading towards the First Battle of the Somme in 1916 and it is this and his time during the battle itself that are the principal subjects in this account.".

A total of 46pp., mostly on 4to Mtotohovu letterheads. In fair condition, aged and worn. From the Meynell family papers. In the first letter he describes his preparations for an elephant shoot on the Serengeti: 'I a taking a 400 elephant gun a 300 high velocity gun, and a shot gun. My escort consists of a gun bearer, cook, tent boy lorry driver & skinner.' Of the participants in the '"Ngoma" native dance games' he writes: 'they really were awful, covered in red & yellow clay or mud - they really did look maniacs & I am sure are more than half Savages'. In the second letter, which is sixteen pages long, he gives a journal account, dated from 3 to 19 September 1932, of his 'adventures on safari'. This is preceded by a description of each of his six main servants, the first being 'John A German Swahili half cast my gun bearer guide & interpreter - a very fine specimen immensely strong, very willing to do his duty & work with no about it'. The entry for 12 September is typical: 'Nothing was seen in the morning from 6-12. Started again at 3 to a high hill which we scaled & found on the top a park like country - trees & grass much greener, here having startled an old Rhino from his bed, we saw a magnificent Kudu on a ridge next to ours, being divided from it by a dry full of thorns & creepers & thick bushes. I knew he had seen us so I shot at him, the bullet passing between his horns & hitting the tank behind him. I lowed the 300 sight & hit him next shot - he hunched up & slowly sank to the ground got up only to fall again. I thought he was done but after leaving a boy to watch, we charged through the thicket to find him gone, the boy shouting that he was on the further hill, so we dashed there - no sign of him, nor could we find his spoor or blood. We hunted till dark & were up there by dawn next morning to see if the vultures could find him - alas no! He is theh best trophy of all, owing to his scarceness hardiness & keen sight & smell. So you can imagine how disappointed I was & still am.' At the end of the safari his 'bag' includes a lion, a zebra, an Eland bull and a wildebeest. The third letter describes his activities in Orange Free State. The fourth letter, written from on board ship, reports that he is 'going to Kenya again taking Aunt Molly up there to see her niece'; he discusses South African politics ('Smuts brilliant as he is, is no politician tho' possibly the best Statesman in the World, while Hertzog is a very able party man'). With the fifth letter he is back in Mtotohovu, going on a trip 'up into the hills' with 'Tommy'. In the last letter he gives an account of the trip, which begins with a stay with 'Major & Mrs Lead at Magindi', and then to Usambana. He ends by expressing the desire to return to Shamba to 'slay' what he regards as his buffalo: 'Alas I cannot get a Rhino which I really want as I can't get another licence for a year having had one already'.
