Außerdem untersuchte er die optische Aktivität. Diese Eigenschaft mancher durchsichtiger Materialien, die Polarisationsrichtung des Lichts zu drehen, wird mit einem Polarimeter gemessen, und kann in der Praxis zur Überprüfung der Reinheit bestimmter Arzneistoffe dienen. U.a. wegen seiner Untersuchungen zum Erdmagnetfeld und seiner Inklination, auf dem Gebiet der Geodäsie und Astronomie führten zu zahlreichen Auszeichnungen und Akademiemitgliedschaften u.a. - Einband etwas gebräunt u. m. wenigen Flecken, eine Ecke mit Hitzefleck; neue Vorsatzbll., Vortitel u. (Préface).- Biot (1774-1862) wurde 1797 Professor für Mathematik an der École Centrale in Beauvais und im Jahr 1800 zum Professor der Physik an das Collège de France in Paris berufen, sowie 1809 zum Professor der Astronomie ernannt. Er war eines der ersten Mitglieder der Société d'Arcueil und im Laufe der Zeit Mitglied aller drei Pariser Akademien. Am 24. August 1804 unternahm er zusammen mit Gay-Lussac eine Fahrt mit dem Wasserstoffballon und erreichte dabei eine Höhe von 4.000 m. Bei dieser Gelegenheit untersuchten beide das Erdmagnetfeld und insbesondere seine Inklination. Biot war auch in der Geodäsie tätig und dehnte 1807-1808 mit Arago die Gradmessung von Méchain und Delambre nach Süden bis zu den Balearen aus.- Innendeckel mit Bibl.-Schildchen, Titel mit Bibl.-Stempel.
