Jean-Baptiste Biot (1774-1862) fomulierte zusammen mit Felix Savart (1791-1841) das Magnetfeld bewegter Ladungen. Ihr Biot-Savart-Gesetz ist eines der Grundgesetze der Magnetostatik. Außerdem untersuchte er die optische Aktivität. Diese Eigenschaft mancher durchsichtiger Materialien, die Polarisationsrichtung des Lichts zu drehen, wird mit einem Polarimeter gemessen, und kann in der Praxis zur Überprüfung der Reinheit bestimmter Arzneistoffe dienen. U.a. wegen seiner Untersuchungen zum Erdmagnetfeld und seiner Inklination, auf dem Gebiet der Geodäsie und Astronomie führten zu zahlreichen Auszeichnungen und Akademiemitgliedschaften u.a. - Einband etwas gebräunt u. m. wenigen Flecken, eine Ecke mit Hitzefleck; neue Vorsatzbll., Vortitel u.
