4 works in one binding, 592, 311, 286, 112, 53 p. Contemporary miniature Tortoiseshell binding with 2 golden clasps, 8 golden hinges, 8 golden nails, and gilt-edged text block, 16° H. 10 x W. 7,5 x D. 4,5 cm. Miniature Dutch church book containing the New Testament, 150 Psalms, evangelical hymns, followed by the Catechism and some Prayers. Attractive binding bound in black with ochre coloured flamed tortoiseshell with two 18-carat golden clasps marked and inscribed: M.H. Winter, 1812. The clasps have straight catches and are cut out in a fleur-de-lys pattern. The use of tortoiseshell as a book binding material became popular in the 17th and 18th centuries and was mostly used for binding religious texts, small Bibles, prayer books, and gift books for the wealthy middle class. The material came from exotic marine turtles and was valued due to its beauty, shine, and rarity. -The name tortoiseshell can therefore be misleading because the material has nothing to do with land tortoises-. Fewer than 4 percent of the luxury bindings made in the Netherlands in the 18th century were covered in materials other than leather and vellum. These bindings were regarded as richer and were more expensive. This is considered even more for tortoise shells since the shells were not imported in large amounts; due to this, the material remained expensive and only available for the rich. The lavishly gilt overall pattern on both covers, mainly consisting of pointillé-stamps and drawer-handle tools, richly gilt spine with 6 compartments with floral motif and raised bands. This kind of binding is often attributed to Magnus as we can read in the catalog of the exhibition: "Albert Magnus en zijn tijd" (1961) pp.13: "That he [father Magnus Hendricksz.] sent his gifted youngest son Albert to France to learn the trade. It is striking in this connection that there are several Bibles printed in Charenton, which are provided with Magnus bindings". Foot, Henry Davis Gift I, 237: "It is unusual for any binder's shop to possess so many and so closely similar variants of a fair number of tools, and as most of the bindings on which the slightly different tools have been used seem to have been produced during the period during which Magnus worked, it is probable that we deal with more than one shop. Surely, a town such as Amsterdam, with a large and thriving book trade, would have had more than one binder who was capable of producing well-bound, beautifully finished books." A fine binding by Magnus or his circle.

In den WarenkorbFirst trade edition of Lawrence of Arabia's narrative of the Arab Revolt, in a handsome Cosway-style binding executed for the British luxury purveyors, Asprey. "Lawrence had taken part in the preliminary planning of the Arab uprising and, in October 1916, was ordered to Jiddah to assess the military situation. What followed is recorded in Seven Pillars of Wisdom, a personal, emotional narrative of the Arab revolt in which Lawrence reveals how by sheer willpower he made history. It was a testimony to his vision and persistence and a fulfilment of his desire to write an epic which might stand comparison in scale and linguistic elegance with his beloved Morte d'Arthur and C. M. Doughty's Arabia Deserta. Subtitled 'A triumph', its climax is the Arab liberation of Damascus, a victory which successfully concludes a gruelling campaign and vindicates Lawrence's faith in the Arabs" (ODNB). This trade edition followed the unprocurable Oxford Times edition of 1922, of which there were just 8 copies printed, and the 1926 Cranwell edition, of which only 170 copies were designated complete for subscribers. O'Brien A042. Quarto (243 x 186 mm). Photogravure portrait frontispiece of Lawrence from the plaster bust, 47 plates (4 colour with tissue guards), 3 facsimiles, 4 maps in red and black, illustrations in text. Bound in the latter 20th century for Asprey in the Cosway style in brown morocco, spine lettered and tooled in gilt, hand-coloured miniature of Lawrence under glass to front cover, gilt border to covers, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Housed in Asprey's brown quarter morocco solander box. A fine copy.

251 x 160 mm. (9 7/8 x 6 1/4"). 2 p.l., 67, [1] pp., [2] leaves, followed by additional suite of etchings. HANDSOME TAN CRUSHED MOROCCO, GILT, BY THE CLUB BINDERY (stamp-signed and dated 1905 on front turn-in), covers framed by gilt strapwork and multiple fillets, raised bands, spine compartments with similar gilt tooling, gilt lettering, densely gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. In a modern (slightly ill-fitting) suede-lined gray linen clamshell box backed with blue morocco. Illustrated throughout with elegant borders and scenes surrounding the text, colored with pochoir. With an additional suite of illustrations, printed in black before letters. Front pastedown with morocco ex-libris of Robert Hoe and with bookplate of the Robin Collection. Spine uniformly a bit darkened, text margins with a hint of browning because of paper quality, but still a very pleasing copy with virtually no signs of use. Bound by one of America's greatest binderies and once owned by the renowned collector Robert Hoe, this is a charming adaptation of a Medieval legend illustrated with delicate pochoir images by a popular French Art Nouveau artist. Originating in the 13th century, the story here concerns a pious sacristan whose faith is tested when she falls in love with a young noble. The pages are adorned with attractive borders inspired by nature, along with images from the story, all colored in soft hues that evoke an angelic, ethereal quality that fits perfectly with the themes of the legend. Our artist, Henri Caruchet (1873-1943), was a sought-after illustrator in the bibliophilic world, producing work for authors such as Octave Uzanne, Theophile Gautier, and Anatole France. The present work also contains a suite of uncolored illustrations printed before letters, allowing the viewer to appreciate how much the pochoir coloring does to enliven Caruchet's designs. Our binding is a product of the esteemed Club Bindery, founded by Grolier Club members and other wealthy collectors to provide, close to home, fine quality binding work rivalling what was available abroad. The workshop provided bindings that tended to be traditional in style--though frequently with elaborate decoration--and that lived up to its patrons' expectations in terms of excellence. The first members of the staff of the Club Bindery were the Englishmen R. W. Smith and Frank Mansell. They were subsequently joined by a number of French binders, chief among them being Léon Maillard, who had worked previously for Cuzin, Gruel, and Marius Michel. The Club Bindery was in operation until 1909, with Robert Hoe (1839-1911) being its most influential manager and client. Hoe was also the founding member and first president of the Grolier Club, and, according to Beverly Chew, his library was "the finest [America] has ever contained." He acquired illuminated manuscripts, early printing (he owned a Gutenberg Bible on paper and one on vellum), fine bindings, French and English literature, and Americana; when his library was sold in 1911-12, it fetched nearly $2 million, a record that held until the Streeter sale more than 50 years later. No. 92 OF 150 COPIES on Japon (and another 10 copies on vellum paper).

The Golden Treasury of the Best Songs and Lyrical Poems in the English Language was a monumental project, not just aimed at capturing the history of English poetry, but at its core explored what we mean by the poetic form (Kirsh). The book's immediate impact on British Victorians was significant, and it remains incredibly influential today (Kirsh). "Palgrave poetry is sincere, direct, and beautiful; it approximates song rather than speech; it deals with the most sweeping subjects-in particular, love, death, and nature-rather than the merely personal and local. Palgrave poetry is almost never urban, ironic, obscure, or verbally ambiguous" (Kirsh). The Austro-Hungarian -born, Joseph Zaehnsdorf (1816-1886) trained with binders in Stuttgart and in Vienna, before moving to Germany, Switzerland, France, and eventually settling London. He working for various shops before opening his own bindery in 1842. In the face of industrializing production Zaehnsdorf embraced craft and eventually gained recognition for his talent. He was known for his precise finish and elegant design. The firm would continue in his son John William's capable hands; it employed binders like Louis Genth, Roger de Coverly, and Sarah Prideaux. Family run until 1947, it was eventually acquired by Asprey of London in 1983 (Gertz). Fine.
