Beth, and the developmental psychologist Jean Piaget--to address a question that had divided them: what is the relationship between formal logic and ordinary human thought? The book is structured in two complementary parts. Beth's contribution takes a historico-critical approach, surveying the philosophy of mathematical reasoning from Aristotle and Descartes through Kant, Leibniz, and the great modern logicians--Frege, Russell, Hilbert, Brouwer, and others--examining how mathematical demonstration works and what role intuition plays alongside formal proof. Piaget's part approaches the same questions psycho-genetically, drawing on his empirical studies of child development to show how logical and mathematical structures emerge from concrete action and sensory-motor activity, gradually becoming internalised as abstract operations of thought. Together the two authors seek a synthesis between the epistemological and psychological dimensions of mathematical knowledge, concluding with reflections on the convergences between formal and genetic approaches.
