Most of the illustrations, all pastel, are in full color. The cloth has soiling from shelf wear and handling. The top and bottom edges of the spine strip and three board corners are frayed. The text block ends have darkened. The pages have occasional fingerprint soiling, mostly on margin. The title page has a chipped corner. Scans e-mailed upon request. The books were based around a 150 word vocabulary and included songs which were used in schools throughout the United States. Her illustrator for the S…unbonnet series, Bertha L. Corbett, later Bertha Corbett Melcher, studied in Philadelphia under Howard Pyle. In 1905, Grover wrote a second series, The Overall Boys. She published twenty-seven books, including SUNBONNET BABIES IN HOLLAND (1915) and The Overall Boys in Switzerland (1916), drawing from her travels in Europe. These books were used by second and third grade students as geography textbooks. She also edited a book of nursery rhymes, Mother Goose: The Original Volland Edition (1915). Scarce DJ with illustration of four boys is protected by Brodart cover and in fair condition. About four inches of spine on DJ is missing, with chipping along edges overall. Although DJ does appear quite worn, it is present and hard to find. Inside contents are in good, readable condition. Pages free of marks or tears, with color illustrations throughout. Binding is strong. A good, readable copy with scarce DJ.

Bertha Corbett (later Melcher) self-published two small books of her Sunbonnet Babies illustrations before approaching Rand, McNally & Company in the… hopes of finding a wider audience. Grover, one of the editor's sisters and a former elementary school teacher, saw the potential in the characters and collaborated with Corbett to produce this book - which turned out to be the beginning of a phenomenon, with the Sunbonnet Babies appearing on everything from quilts to porcelains. A terrific copy. 9'' x 6.75''. Original tan pictorial cloth. Green pictorial endpapers with music by W.H. Neidlinger. Illustrated by Corbett in color throughout. 105, [1] pages.
