Bertha Corbett Melcher's first Sunbonnet Babies book was published in 1900, after which her little girls with faces hidden by bonnets captivated children and grown-ups everywhere. Although she was also a recognized artist of water colours, oil portraits and miniatures on ivory, Bertha's "Babies" remain her claim to fame.
