Zustand: Fine. in-4 (210x150 mm), ll. (4), 104 (Segn.: ?? a-n?). Bella xilografia al titolo (95x116 mm), iniziali xilografiche bianche su sfondo nero, carattere romano. Elengante legatura novecentesca in marocchino verde, titolo in oro su dorso a nervi, dentelles e tagli dorati. Pregevole edizione di una delle prime traduzioni italiane del Modus Bene Vivendi, raccolta di sermoni attribuita sia a San Bernardo di Chiaravalle (1090 - 1153) sia a Tommaso del Frigido Monte, ovvero Tommaso da Beverley (1150 ca. - 1225). Oltre a essere un esempio particolarmente pregevole di stampa post incunabola, l'opera è illustrata da una superba grande xilografia sul frontespizio che raffigura Bernardo mentre predica in strada ad un gruppo di monache e monaci in una strada della città, all'interno di una bordura di disegni geometrici in stile fiorentino. Essling nota che la xilografia è apparsa per la prima volta due mesi prima nelle Prediche di Caracciolo (10 ottobre). Raro (solo quattro copie in biblioteche italiane secondo Edit16). Ottimo esemplare, freschissimo, impresso con cura ed eleganza. Dalla collezione del bibliofilo Erich von Rath (ex-libris al contropiatto anteriore), che fu direttore della Biblioteca Universitaria di Bonn, professore ed eminente incunabolista. Zustand: Good. in-8 (mm 210x144), ff. LXXXXI (i.e.90), le carte 3-6 con numerazione araba, in particolare carattere semigotico; con 3 vignette xilografiche: una al frontespizio raffigurante Cristo sulla croce (mm 49x33), un'altra al verso della c. a2 con Madonna e Gesù bambino (mm 68x48), e la terza al verso dell'ultima c. che raffigura San Lorenzo con graticola e palma del supplizio (mm 68x68). Due grandi iniziali ornate e una ricca bordura, con fregi e immagini di Santi, che incornicia la prima pagina delle Opere, il tutto in xilografia. Elegante legatura ottocentesca in mezza pelle con  dorso a nervi, titolo e fregi in oro.  Affascinante testo sul misticismo cristiano, attribuito a Bernardo di Chiaravalle, Cistercense e dottore della Chiesa, nato a Fontaines-les-Dijon (Borgogna) nel 1090 circa e morto a Clairvaux nel 1153. Pregevole e non comune edizione in volgare curata da una monaca, suor Genevera de' Pepoli. La dedica, "alla diletta sposa de Christo" Caterina del Gesso - consorella del suo monastero di San Lorenzo a Bologna - offre una testimonianza della vasta cultura di una religiosa nel Rinascimento bolognese. Oltre alle opere di san Bernardo, che Suor Genevera dichiara di voler dare alle stampe a beneficio delle sue consorelle per conforto spirituale, il volume contiene anche un'Epistola di Giovanni delle Celle di Vallombrosa (corrispondente di santa Caterina da Siena) e una lettera di santa Elisabetta da Foligno alle sue consorelle monache agostiniane di Santa Croce, emblematici del monachesimo femminile. Writing between 1148-53, Bernard is considered with the fate of pope Eugenius's reign. "I look," he says to the new pope, "at the height and I fear a fall, I see the mouth of the abyss that lies beneath you." The papacy is filled with temptation: and although you have obtained a higher place, it is not a safer pace. The successor of the Apostles should not occupy himself in judging worldly affairs and disputes between the powerful he says. Bernhard von Clairvaux (1090 - 1153) gilt als der bedeutenste katholische Heilige des 12. Jahrhunderts; als Vertreter eines Gottes- und Christusmystizismus war er ein Gegner jeglicher Dialektik, propagierte an entscheidender Stelle (Eugen III) den zweiten Kreuzzug und wandte sich gegen die päpstliche Weltherrschaft. Die Authentizität seiner Texte ist nicht gesichert, doch werden die hier vorliegenden extensiven Kommentare (in 86 Predigten) zum Hohen Lied (cantica canticorum Salomonis) als sein Hauptwerk betrachtet (vgl. RGG 1, 923f). Über Gilbertus ist wenig mehr bekannt und/oder gesichert als sein Kommentar zum Hohen Lied und eine Vita Bernardi, die von Mabillon zusammen mit dem Bernardus-Text herausgegeben wurde (vgl. Page 2 depicts Christ in the winepress (full page woodcut). Further with 45 large and 18 smaller woodcut illustrations (some repeated). With a contemporary manuscript ex-libris on the pen-ultimate page: ''desen boec hoert toe Lysbeth vande zype. With a later manuscript ex-libris on the first paste-down of Maria Conickx, nun at Leliendaal (near Mechelen). On the same page she states that she entered the convent on 1 august 1636 and was ordained on 24 januari 1638. Bound in somewhat later (17th c.) full vellum with overlapping edges, manuscript title on spine (and year of printing). Printed on strong paper in gothic type. Superb copy with no stains on the inside and only a few minor stains at the back cover. The binding nor the book show any signs of wear or use.The text is an early Dutch translation of the ''Vitis Mystica'' or the True Vine by Bernardus de Clairvaux** . Remarkably well preserved illustrated copy of this mystic text. It is a witness to the high degree of religeous sofistication arrived by in Dutch society: the book is published in the vernacular (Dutch). A few decades later all this was swept away upon the arrival of the Renaissance, Humanism (Erasmus) and the Religeous Wars. **Allthough traditionnally catalogued under the authorship of Bernardus; the work is now ascribed to Bonaventura.
