Exceedingly rare,… 7 copies complete worldwide. Red morocco binding (140 x 100 mm). A crisp copy with pretty pen work initials Bernard of Clairvaux's aim is the reform of the papacy. Writing between 1148-53, Bernard is considered with the fate of pope Eugenius's reign. "I look," he says to the new pope, "at the height and I fear a fall, I see the mouth of the abyss that lies beneath you." The papacy is filled with temptation: and although you have obtained a higher place, it is not a safer pace. The successor of the Apostles should not occupy himself in judging worldly affairs and disputes between the powerful he says. By contrast, it is your task is to defend the oppressed and the poor: "We cannot abandon the downtrodden; we cannot refuse judgment to those who suffer injustice".

Jhdt?) restauriert bzw. neu gebunden: dabei in der Länge gebrochener Holz-Vorderdeckel mit 3 schmalen, kurzen Metallstreifen und je 2 Nägeln fixiert; die Filetenprägung des Rückens auf den Holzdeckeln fortgesetzt; Block neu eingehängt; Vorsätze erneuert. Rücken gebräunt und etwas fleckig; Deckel etwas berieben; 2 Besitzvermerke auf Titelei ("Matthias Burgklehner", "Georg Stadler", der ältere vermutl aus dem 17./18. Jhdt); erste 4 Bl. gerändert und fingerfleckig; zu Beginn am Fuß schwach feuchtigkeitswellig bzw. -randig; etwas fleckig und gebräunt; 1 Bl. mit Einriss; ca. 30 Bl. mit Wurmgang im weißen Rand. Verbundenes Exemplar: Lage j1-8 (Register) nach s1-8 des zweiten Teils gehört ans Ende des ersten Teils. Es fehlt das weiße Blatt L8 des zweiten Teils. Bernhard von Clairvaux (1090 - 1153) gilt als der bedeutenste katholische Heilige des 12. Jahrhunderts; als Vertreter eines Gottes- und Christusmystizismus war er ein Gegner jeglicher Dialektik, propagierte an entscheidender Stelle (Eugen III) den zweiten Kreuzzug und wandte sich gegen die päpstliche Weltherrschaft. Die Authentizität seiner Texte ist nicht gesichert, doch werden die hier vorliegenden extensiven Kommentare (in 86 Predigten) zum Hohen Lied (cantica canticorum Salomonis) als sein Hauptwerk betrachtet (vgl. RGG 1, 923f). Über Gilbertus ist wenig mehr bekannt und/oder gesichert als sein Kommentar zum Hohen Lied und eine Vita Bernardi, die von Mabillon zusammen mit dem Bernardus-Text herausgegeben wurde (vgl. With a later manuscript ex-libris on the first paste-down of Maria Conickx, nun at Leliendaal (near Mechelen). On the same page she states that she entered the convent on 1 august 1636 and was ordained on 24 januari 1638. Bound in somewhat later (17th c.) full vellum with overlapping edges, manuscript title on spine (and year of printing). Printed on strong paper in gothic type. Superb copy with no stains on the inside and only a few minor stains at the back cover. The binding nor the book show any signs of wear or use.The text is an early Dutch translation of the ''Vitis Mystica'' or the True Vine by Bernardus de Clairvaux** . Remarkably well preserved illustrated copy of this mystic text. It is a witness to the high degree of religeous sofistication arrived by in Dutch society: the book is published in the vernacular (Dutch). A few decades later all this was swept away upon the arrival of the Renaissance, Humanism (Erasmus) and the Religeous Wars. **Allthough traditionnally catalogued under the authorship of Bernardus; the work is now ascribed to Bonaventura.
