Hill was a soldier, author, and epicure. Rebacked in a quarter cloth binding, with the original paper boards. Externally, boards are a little rubbed and discoloured. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities, with a little loss of paper to the extremities. Minor marks to the boards. Front hinge is strained. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with scattered spots, spotting heavier to the plates. Good. Leatherbound. Zustand: Good. 2 vols.: viii, 342; vi, 328 p. 20 cm. Full leather with gold and blank impressing, burgundy spine labels, marbled endpapers and text block edges. Vol. I has tear in spine head, crease or tear in top spine label. Both volumes a bit scuffed on outside, both with chipped bottom labels. Bookplates on front pastedowns for Clifford Cyril Scott. Light foxing. Ink inscription on a front endpaper in vol. I: "Edwyn Stanhope given him by his friend R. Goring Thomas On his leaving Eton July 9, 1841." The author (1790? - 1845) journeyed to Ireland in 1810 to join the Royal Artillery as a Second Lieutenant. His first active military service was at the British defeat at New Orleans, and he appeared at Waterloo too late to join in the battle. While his memoirs may be of interest to military historians, they may be even more appealing to theatre buffs. Much of Hill's spare time was spent attending theatrical presentations or performing as an amateur actor himself. Bookplate is likely that of Lt. Col.
