Si tratta della rara edizione originale pubblicata sotto pseudonimo e con falsi dati di stampa per sfuggire alla censura. L'autore opera un profondo atto d'accusa alla religione cristiana sostenendo che quest'ultima è fonte d'errori, ignoranza e sottomissione dei popoli. L'apparizione di quest'opera provocò un evidente e clamoroso scandalo tanto da far affermare a Voltaire che il suo contenuto equivaleva a."bombe lancée contre l'édifice de l'Église".…

Prima edizione, seconda tiratura (errata corrige e punto anzichè virgola dopo Londres al titolo), della "Bibbia del Materialismo", pubblicata sotto il nome di J.B. Mirabaud  (traduttore e polemista antireligioso deceduto da tempo) nel 1770, e subito messa al rogo. La più nota opera di Holbach (1723-1789), in cui l'autore sviluppa i motivi critici del razionalismo deterministico di Diderot, esaltando il materialismo causalistico e negando la metafisica. Il suo Sistama, volto al raggiungimento della felicità intesa come benessere individuale, risulta un'esasperazione del pensiero dell'Illuminismo, e come tale fu respinto dallo stesso Voltaire. "Nel Système Holbach. continuò il suo attacco diretto alla religione cercando di dimostrare che essa derivava interamente dall'abitudine e dalla consuetudine. Ma il Système non era un libro negativo o distruttivo: Holbach rifiutava la religione perché la considerava un'influenza del tutto dannosa e cercava di fornire un'alternativa più desiderabile. Infatti, delineò un'intera filosofia etica e politica, che ampliò nelle sue opere successive" (cfr. Printing and the Mind of Man). L'opera raggiunse rapidamente le 10 edizioni.
