Cofias desgastadas y parcialmente abiertas; pequeñas raspaduras; interior fresco, sin anotaciones ni subrayados; esporádicas manchas; buen papel; amplios márgenes; ¿Firma de Formey al final de 2ª obra?- // Proc.: Sin datos.- // Hermoso ejemplar de estas tres obras difíciles de encontrar, que ya eran raras y muy buscadas en 1858, como atestigua una nota que se encuentra al recto de la guarda flotante trasera. Formey, eterno secretario de la Academia de Ciencias de Berlín, va a defender que la virtud es el único y verdadero destino del hombre, pero despojándola de todos lo abusos que se han cometido sobre ella, como cuando se ha pretendido equipararla al honor. Deista, se situa en contra de las corrientes utilitaristas (bien representadas en Helvetius) que basan su sistema en la idea de que todo el mundo sigue una inclinación natural hacia el principio de 'lo mejor para mí'. Frente a ella, frente al mal y la injusticia, defiende el sentido del bien y la justicia para los demás, sentido que, dice, nos es imbuido por el Ser Supremo. Esta tesis, sostenida en el primero de los ensayos recogidos en el volumen, 'Sistema de la verdadera felicidad', se ve completada por la tesis argumentada en el segundo, 'Ensayo sobre la perfección', donde arguye que 'perfección' consiste en una serie constante de acciones libres (nuestra vida moral) que, coordinándose entre sí y con las acciones naturales y necesarias (la Ley Natural, que no son nuestros impulsos animales), caminan con el mismo objetivo y procuran a nuestra alma y a nuestro cuerpo el ejercicio más completo de sus facultades. Ambas obras son paradigmáticas del modelo ilustrado de deismo empirista en el que se engranaban el Ser Supremo, las leyes naturales, el conocimiento del mundo a través de las sensaciones y la obligación de conducta moral del ser humano. Por su parte, la tercera de las obras recogidas en el volumen reune dos ensayos, uno de Federico II de Prusia, que se enuncia sobre qué justifica que se establezcan o que se deroguen las leyes, para lo que hace un recorrido histórico desde la antigüedad, pero que en realidad va destinado a que se prohiban los duelos para concluir que deben establecerse las leyes con severidad en pueblos atrasados y con humanidad en los pueblos avanzados. "Imaginar que los hombres son todos demonios y atacarlos con crueldad es la visión de un misántropo feroz: suponer que los hombres son todos ángeles y darles rienda; es el sueño de un capuchino imbécil: creer que no son todos buenos ni todos malos; recompensando las buenas acciones más allá de su precio, castigando las malas por debajo de lo que merecen, teniendo indulgencia por sus debilidades y humanidad para todos, así debe actuar un hombre razonable". Y el segundo de los ensayos de esta tercera obra recogida en este volumen facticio, este sí de Formey, que acababa de publicarlo dentro de las 'Memorias de la Academia', versa sobre qué puede cocnluirse sobre.
