A very scarce account of ballooning by a man probably better remembered as the author of A Ride to Khiva: Travels and Adventures in Central Asia (1876) and On Horseback Through Asia Minor (1877). An adventurer and… British Army intelligence officer, the very picture of a Victorian imperialist hero, he met his end in hand-to-hand fighting at the Battle of Abu Klea. Some spotting to title-page and last page of text. In den Warenkorb3pp., foolscap 8vo. On a bifolium of laid paper. In fair condition, aged and worn. The first poem, 'Balooning [sic]', covers both sides of the first leaf. No evidence has been discovered that this poem was ever published, but it is inspired by the exploits of 'Mr. Green' in a humorous essay titled 'Ballooning', which appeared in… Charles Dickens's 'Household Words' on 25 October 1851. The choice of two phrases ('pipes & backy' and 'Mounted Meershaums') is given in the present manuscript, these variants perhaps suggesting that this item is authorial rather than a transcription. The second poem, which covers the recto of the second leaf (the verso being undated), is untitled in the manuscript, but is Harry Sydney's 'It's just as well to take it in a quiet sort of way', which was published in 1865 in London by Henri D'Alcorn [George Henry Stannard Allcorn]. ONE: 'Balooning [sic]'. 2pp. The poem is forty-eight lines long, divided into twelve stanzas, each stanza followed by the refrain 'Fal de ral.' The present poem begins: '1st. Verse | When the London people used to think of going out of Town | They'd take a Stage & that would to the Country take 'em down | But Mister Green has lately proved as clear's the sun at noon | The finest way to take the air is to take an air balloon - | Fal de lal. | 2. | The other day when Mister Green went out just for a fly | He took up two companions for a ride towards the sky | Though Lords & Butler thus ventured up they found the difference soon | For they were all reduced to Carmen when they rode in the Balloon | Fal de ral.' The poem describes their journey, made without 'fears of Highwaymen'. In the ninth stanza the travellers 'take their pipes & backy out', and the word 'backy' is glossed with the variant reading for 'pipes & backy' at the foot of the second page: 'Mounted Meershaums out.' The final stanza reads: '12. | Now we find that different trav'lers will travel diff'rent ways | Some like a railroad, some a stage & some a Horse & Chaise | Some being fond of water think a steam boat (quite) exquisite | But there's nothing like an air balloon to pay a flying visit. | Fal de ral'. TWO: Untitled [Harry Sydney's 'It's just as well to take it in a quiet sort of way']. 1p. Twenty-four lines in eight stanzas. Begins: '1 | We smile at the unnecessary trouble people take | For fortune is not regulated by the fuss we make. | I don't advise indifference, but this I mean to say: | Its just as well to take things in a quiet sort of way.' The poem was hugely popular, being described as 'a certain sort of comic singing which I can't stand' by a character in Fun magazine, 2 September 1865. The American impressario Tony Pastor (1837-1908) published a version of the poem in New York in 1868, without the following stanza of the present manuscript: 'To rise in your opinion most earnestly I hope, | But promise you I'll never mount the trapeze or the rope: | I fancy in the long run that common sense will pay; | And its just as well to take things in a quiet sort of way.'.

The poem consists of 96 lines, in twelve eight-line stanzas; it is arranged in two columns beneath the title: 'ON THE WING. | BY JOHN LAWTON.' Gay-Lussac's paper: pp. 75-94 a. large foldet "Tableau des Observations". Internally clean, printed on good paper. First printing of the scientific account of Gay-Lussac'…s famous ascent in a hydrogen ballon in order to make observations on the composition of the air, pressure and the earth's magnetic force. This voyage together with the voyage in the same year with Biot is the first ascents with a scientific purpose."Gay-Lussac made an ascent in a hydrogen ballon with Biot on 24 August 1804. The primary object of the ascent was to see whether the magnetic intensity at theearth's surface decreased with an increase in altitude. The concluded that it was constant up to 4,000 meters. They also carried long wires to test the electricity of different parts of the atmosphere. Another object was to collect a sample of air from a high altitude to compare its composition with that of air at ground level. Gay-Lussac made a second ascent, on 16. September 1804 (the paper offered), but this time by himself, in order to lessen the weight of the balloon and thus reach a greater high.He was able to repeat observations of pressure, temperature, and humidity and also make magnetic measurem, ents. He had taken two evacuated flasks, which he opened to collect samples of air when he had attained an altitude of over 6,000 meters. His subsequent analysiss of these samples showed that the portion of oxygen was identical with that in ordinary air. Gay-Lussac reached a calculated high of 7,o16 meters above sea level, a record not equaled for another half a century."(DSB V, p. 318).Brockett: 5164 a - Tissandier p. 23.The volume contains other importent papers, Thenard "Mémoire sur la liqueur fumante e Cadet", Parmentier "Experiences et Observations sur la collage et la clarification des vins, de la biere, etc.", Vauquelin "Analyse des topazes", Chenevix and others.

In den WarenkorbScarce material capturing the excitement generated by the launch of Le Géant, 6,000 cubic metres in size and equipped with a huge cabin, to celebrate Belgian National Day. As much a publicist as an aviator, Nadar turned the event into an epic spectacle, the crowds teeming behind barriers. He shared a passion for the skies with J…ules Verne, who drew on Nadar's exploits for his writings. Born Gaspard-Félix Tournachon, Nadar (1820-1910) was also a pioneering photographer, taking some of the earliest aerial shots of Paris. Le Géant was commissioned from the balloonist Eugène Goddard in 1863 and was first launched in Paris in October of the same year in front of 80,000 people. A second launch drew half a million people, setting the stage for the scenes in Brussels. Among those struck by the sight was Jules Verne, who had established Societe d'aviation with Nadar in 1862. Verne based Five Weeks in a Balloon (1863) on Le Géant, and Nadar appeared as the character Michael Ardan in Verne's From the Earth to the Moon (1865). The publications give information on the balloonist's background and his visit, their excitable tone sometimes crossing over into satire. a) Le Ballon Le Géant et Nadar, Pérégrinations, Accidents, Notices biographiques, etc. etc. Brussels: P. In den Warenkorb4to. 1 p. Written on the lithographed stationery of their "Parc Aérostatique de la Seine", complete with a photo of the site with one of Gilbert's bicycle-powered hot air balloons. - Charles Gilbert is best remembered for his "aérocycle rotateur" Gladiateur that was sponsored by the like-named bicycle company. This hot air balloon with an attached bicycle allowed Gilbert to power a propeller and direct his flight. In 1900, Gilbert moved to Moscow, where he demonstrated his hot air balloon several times and even taught at the Polytechnic Institute. - The better-known Gaston Hervieu was a balloonist, engineer, and aeronautic inventor. He competed in the ballooning events at the 1900 Summer Olympics, winning a bronze medal in the duration category for a 17h 51m flight. In 1907, Hervieu assisted Walter Wellman with his airship America, including the construction of a gas generator, in a failed attempt to reach the North Pole from Svalbard (Spitsbergen). As an inventor, Hervieu greatly improved parachute technology, his design allowing for jumps from much lower altitudes than previousily possible. The successful test of his silk parachute with a dummy on Eiffel Tower on 22 February 1911 made international headlines. Tragically, the Austrian-born tailor Franz Reichelt, who was trying to a develop a wearable parachute, felt incited by Hervieu's successful test to demonstrate his own invention and plunged to his death from the Eiffel Tower on 4 February 1912. - Insigificant tears.
