An interesting exhibition documenting four Danish painters from the De Fire group. They showed together 7 times in Copenhagen in the 1920s, at which time they mostly lived in France. Characterized by their self-conscious, yet innocent humor and irony, these artists greatly impacted and invigorated the Modernist art movement in Denmark. Inspired by great masters such as Cezanne, they painted varied figurative, still life paintings with a cubist connotation. A wonderfully-executed catalog on a joint exhibition of two artists who, while working in different mediums, are both integrating innovative approaches to their customary work. For example, alongside her typical jewelry design, Vigeland has embarked on a number of free, sculptural experiments, and Groth has made the move from large-scale drawings to a modest format more akin to that of book illustration.
