Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - International schooling has expanded rapidly in recent years, with the number of students educated in international schools projected to reach seven million by 2023. Drawing on the author's extensive experience conducting research in international schools across the globe, this book critically analyses the concept of international schooling and its rapid growth in the 21st century. It identifies the forces driving this trend, asking to what extent this is an enterprise that meets the needs of a global elite, and examining its relationship to national systems of education. The author demonstrates how wider social inequalities around socio-economic difference, ethnicity, 'race' and gender are reproduced through international schooling and examines the theory that 'international' curricula are in fact Western curricula. Presenting research from diverse countries including Russia, Malaysia, the UAE, the UK, and Bahrain, the author explores ways in which international schools adapt to local cultural contexts and examines the views of parents, students, teachers and school leaders towards the education that they provide.

In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. One of the earliest locally produced modern maps of Bahrain. Colour printed on both sides of a single sheet 95x70cm titled Manama North and Manama South respectively (giving a total size of @95x140cm). This folds down into colour illustrated card wraps 13x19cm containing colour maps to its interior and a booklet with 18pp English, 21pp Arabic texts presenting background information and a detailed index. Map near fine with closed fold tear where it is bound in and a pencilled label "Aramco Office" in the Industrial Area on the Manama South side with a couple of neat pencil underlines; booklet fine with some spotting; wraps very good with closed tears and creasing. This appears to be very rare with Worldcat locating only 2 institutions (OCLC 9684791: LoC; Ohio State University), and unrecorded on Library Hub. It dates shortly after Bahrain contracted Fairey Surveys to produce an important baseline series of topographical maps on various scales (1977, with subsequent editions into the 2000s), prior to which Bahrain maps had mainly been drawn by oil companies and the British and US military. In 1978 the Ministry of Housing established its Survey Directorate to maintain these surveys. This particular map, prepared by the Directorate on a scale of approx 1/2,500, is thus based on Fairey Surveys 1/10K (1977), Ministry of Housing development plans, and information supplied by the National Addressing Project (NAP). NAP, with the motto "To save time and effort", divided Bahrain into 11 Regions, of which Manama is No.3. Each Region was subdivided into numbered Blocks (eg, Block 320 is in Manama, identifiable by the "3" prefix). It defined a Block as a group of houses, shops, roads and lanes surrounded by avenues. Streets are classified as highways, avenues, roads, and lanes, with each road or lane number prefixed by the Block number (booklet pp2-5). This detailed map, captioned in Arabic and English and featuring an alphanumeric grid and Block numbers, shows the various street types, zones, major buildings, mosques, public areas, private areas, parks or gardens, and water. One of the maps inside the wraps shows Bahrain's 11 regional boundaries. The index is arranged into several types of important places followed by avenues, roads and lanes. Worldcat shows that corresponding maps for other regions were issued during 1980-82. (Reference: mapBH, "Fairey Surveys: History of modern map-making in Bahrain", 4/9/2024).

Five show the entrance and facade of the Bahrain Police Fort (Qal'ah al-Diwan) in Manama from a distance, with mounted police, brass band, and other units on parade, one of which with a child in the foreground. One shows a pair of children in front of a Bahrain Police helicopter. Another shows Bahraini locals and ex-pats mingling in the car park with minaret visible in the distance. The photos are not dated or captioned, and the photographer and others in attendance are unfortunately not identified. Possibly 1960s. The Bahrain News Agency has some similar archive views online, also undated, of a ceremony, and the helicopter (BNA, "Archival image of Police Fort, Interior Ministry", 06 Sep 2018). Six photos are about very good with some foxing and light creasing. One (the helicopter) is rubbed with surface loss to the image. Unique.

In den Warenkorb8vo (142 x 216 mm). Pages 40-47 and 30-39; entire volume: CX, 156 pp. With 3 folding lithographed maps, one showing Bahrain. Contemporary green full morocco, spine titled in gilt, covers ruled in gilt, upper cover with Kennelly coat of arms. Leading edges and inner dentelle gilt; all edges gilt. Rare first edition of the 16th volume of the "Transactions of the Bombay Geographical Society", containing a detailed geographical account of island of Bahrain and the navigation of its waters, with particular attention to the Khaur-el-Bab channel, which had long been reported by pilots to be unnavigable (apparently at the direction of the Sheikh of Bahrain, who was jealous of other powers using it), but which had recently been proved a feasible and even important approach. Lt. R. W. Whish, surveyor and commander of the Indian Navy schooner HMS Mahi, includes with his report a large (71 x 51 cm) map of the northern half of Bahrain, entitled, "Survey of Bahreyn Harbour and the Khaur-el-Bab. Executed in HMS 'Mahi' IN as opportunity offered, whilst stationed as Guard Vessel between Bahreyn and Demam, from October 1859 to March 1860". - Further includes an account by Lt. Wm. M. Pengelly, British Agent at Muscat, of the Omani coast between Sohar and Muscat, describing flora and fauna, towns and forts of the Al Batinah region, with several meteorological tables for the months of June, July and August. - The first 90 pages comprise the "Proceedings" of the Society, and these contain much interesting material of their own: for example, the session at which Pengelly presented his description of Oman also includes a first-hand account of the 1861 eruption of Jebel Dubbi (or Edd), a volcano in the Southern Red Sea Region of Eritrea. The following pages contain the articles submitted by members of the Society, dealing with various additional subjects of research in India, Peru, Palestine, Suez, Africa, and Japan. - Binding a little rubbed, but generally in excellent condition. Presentation copy, handsomely bound for D. J. Kennelly, secretary of the Bombay Geographical Society, with lithographed presentation bookplate to front pastedown, dated 1866. - Macro 2295 & 1755. In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Good. Extremely rare publicity brochure describing the Bahrain Defence Force's origins, philosophy, and progress. Original spiral-bound green card wraps 25x25cm, white titled with gilt BDF emblem to the front. (29)pp Arabic text, illustrated primarily in colour throughout. Wraps good with pale vertical streaks where the green ink has rubbed off, interiors very good. This appears to be extremely rare. Undated but 1977-8, 9 years on from its establishment (p28). Crown Prince Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa formed the Bahrain Defence Force during 1968 to Feb 1969, and was its first Commander-in-Chief (1969-99). He had just graduated from the Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot (1968), and returned to serve as Commander of the Bahrain National Guard (1968-9). In 1970, he became Head of Bahrain's Department of Defence, and from 1971-88 was Minister of Defence. During 1972-3 he obtained a degree in Leadership from the US Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth. With Iran making claims on Bahrain, and with British withdrawal imminent, he was inspired to form the BDF in a spirit of Pan-Arabism. He ordered new barracks to be built at personal expense, and restoration of the old for use as a training camp. The BDF sourced local people with scientific knowledge to deal with modern military equipment. Hamad ruled out conscription in favour of voluntary recruitment, and took measures to foster leadership. He regarded the BDF as a family, integral to Bahraini society, participating in national days and other celebrations, reaching out through lectures and seminars. He promoted it as a force for the wider Arab Homeland, cooperating with other Gulf Arab states. Prizes were awarded to motivate achievement. In between training, soldiers were encouraged to use libraries, engage in reading, writing and conversations to learn about their culture, religion, general education and military science. The text also reproduces the military oaths of allegiance. The photos include portraits of the Emir, Crown Prince Hamad, and Prime Minister, show soldiers taking their oaths, training, on manoeuvres, on parade, playing sport, and at prayer. Twelve insignia representing different parts of the BDF are reproduced.
