Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. THE ROMAN CAMPAGNA AND ITS TREASURES BY GILBERT BAGNANI 1930 36 PLATES/3 MAPS. Having lived for a number of years along the New Appian Way (Via Appia Nova), this book would have been a wonderful reference. On offer here: The Roman Campagna and Its Treasures by Gilbert Bagnan…i. This small hard cover book (5 ¼ x 7 ¾ inches, 320 pages) was published by Charles Scribner s Sons of New York dated 1930 (a probable First American Edition). It is bound in dark red finely ribbed cloth boards with gilt titles on the spine. There are 36 b&w illustrations, blank on the reverse and 3 maps. In addition, the endpapers are decorated with two of those nice maps of the Roman Campagna (Northern and Southern Sections). Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are a bit dust dulled and the spine is faded by the sun and has some white smears at its base. The boards are very lightly bumped. Inside there are some lightly penciled notations (bookseller prices-easily erasable) on the first blank page but those are the only marks I found in the book. The interior pages and photo plates are clean and bright without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

Focusing on the evolution of ecclesiastical authority in the context of Roman political development, Gilbert Bagnani provides a comprehensive ana…lysis of the tensions and reconciliations that have shaped Western history. The work meticulously examines the concept of sovereignty, tracing the Papacy's role from the early Christian era through the rise of Italian nationalism and into the early 20th century. The essay offers a profound look at the 'Roman Question' and the diplomatic challenges faced by the Vatican in maintaining its spiritual independence amidst changing political landscapes. By evaluating the legal, social, and religious dimensions of church-state relations, Bagnani sheds light on the foundational conflicts that defined the modern status of the Holy See. 'Rome and the Papacy' remains a significant contribution to the fields of political science and religious history, providing essential context for understanding the dual nature of Rome as both a secular capital and a spiritual center. This work is an invaluable resource for anyone seeking to understand the enduring interplay between faith and political power. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
