Die Arbeit befasst sich mit dem deutschsprachigen Realismus der Gründerzeit, und zwar im Hinblick auf Übergänge zur modernen Literatur. Ihre Leitfrage und Verfahrensweise zielt darauf, anhand von Romantexten im ?uvre der drei bedeutenden realistischen Autoren in der späten Schaffensperiode - Raabes Stopfkuchen (1893), Fontanes Frau Jenny Treibel (1892) und Kellers Martin Salander (1886) - die Auflösung des realistischen Schreibens auf bestimmte geschichtlich-gesellschaftliche Erfahrung der Moderne zurückzuführen und dies mit dem Problem der Notwendigkeit und der Form des neuen modernen Erzählens zu verknüpfen. Die jeweils einem Roman gewidmeten Innenteile gliedern sich ihrerseits in zwei Schritte, in die sujetorientierte Interpretation und in die Frage nach der Romanform. Dabei wird das Sujet des Romans nicht als Einzelfaktisches, sondern in der Bedeutung von etwas Kategorischem wie Eigentum, Öffentlichkeit, Kleinfamilie usw. aufgefasst, durch welches Sozialerfahrungen und die symbolische ästhetische Form vermittelbar werden.
