Spines with five raised bands, morocco title and author labels, gilt decoration to compartments. Marbled page edges and endpapers. Light rubbing to spines and corners of boards. Good solid bindings with no cracking to joints. Foxing to leading and trailing blanks, a few occasional spots to text. Upper corner torn from p59/60 in Volume I, appears to be an original production flaw - no loss of text. Gift inscription to verso of front free endpaper in both volumes, dated 1855. Pasted to the leading blank in Volume I is an original letter to Lady Coltman, handwritten and signed by Sydney Smith. Final page in Volume I and final two pages in Volume II have pasted newspaper articles relating to Smith, with marking from the glue. Overall condition is Very Good. English dramatist Sydney Grundy (1848-1914) was born in Manchester; he became a lawyer (1869-1876) and a playwright. His first play, A Little Change, was produced at the Haymarket Theatre in 1872; he was a librettist of comic operas, many of his plays were adaptions and a number of his plays were performed on Broadway. Lacking original wrappers, printed text begins with title page, uneven tanning and soiling on title page and final printed page, pages are creased, with short nicked tear, at lower corner; a good copy only First American edition thus (by Penn Publishing Company).…

With a tipped-in colour frontispiece to Issue No. 25.Volume I and II edited by the magazine's founder, Stanley Elston Austin, an art critic, journalist and prominent figure in the art circles of London and Paris. He wrote for publications including Vanity Fair and wrote a book on the history of engraving.Volume III edited by Austin and Richard Sydney Glover, who served with the Artist Rifles during the First World War and exhibited at the Royal Academy. He was the first editor of Apollo, the International Art Magazine from 1925-1929.Each front paste down bears a decorative bookplate printed with the name Mackmurdo. A suggestive association with English architect and designer Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo, who heavily influenced the Arts and Crafts Movement when he set up the Century Guild of Artists with Herbert Home in 1882. Whilst there is a chance this bookplate was designed for someone else and signed by Mackmurdo, examples of that happening usually bear the owner's name, not his. We therefore cannot be absolutely sure of whether this set lived in his library, but the date given to the plate (1880) and the publication date of this work would fall into his lifetime. Uniformly bound in half morocco, with cloth boards. Externally, very smart, with minor rubbing to the extremities and fading to the spines. Bookplate of one Internally, firmly bound.
