Upper corner torn from p59/60 in Volume I, appears to be an original production flaw - no loss of text. Gift inscription to verso of front free endpaper in both volumes, dated 1855. Pasted to the leading blank in Volume I is an original letter to Lady Coltman, handwritten and signed by Sydney Smith. Final page in Volume I and final two pages in Volume II have pasted newspaper articles relating to Smith, with marking from the glue. Overall condition is Very Good. This collection of work contains articles originally published in the Edinburgh Review and discusses topics such as prisons, sermons and speeches. In full calf. Externally very smart with fading to the spine and bumping to the extremities resulting in rubbing. Light marks to the boards, heavier to the rear. Minor rubbing to the spine and joints. Past owners bookplate and light tide marks to the front pastedown. Internally firmly bound with bright pages. Generally clean with the odd spot, heavier to the front and rear. Old ink inscription dated 1856 to the front blank and tidemarks to the rear blanks. Very Good. book.

Black Blind-Stamped Cloth. Zustand: VG. 1st ed. vii+424, this is number 54 and inscribed to 'The Misses Longman' top half-title, with as small text correction ( 'past' for 'passed') to margin p.264 in the same hand (probably his widow's, who edited the work); prev.owner's small gilt label top front pastedown, earlier red heraldic label of George Pottrell centre same, a few ball-point squiggles to facing endpaper, otherwise internally clean, tight and unmarked; covers clean and mostly minimally worn, however chip across top spine has been very neatly repaired and a similar across bottom has been relaid, bottom spine has 'Not Published' but 'ed' and most of 'h' are lost. Despite the faults this remains a very good copy of this scarce collection of Smith's popular lectures, mostly on psychological topics (the the province of 'mental philosophy' such as memory, imagination, passions, beauty and habit.
