Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First edition (Hiller's De arcano). Sammelband of two works published in 1688 and 1692, bound in contemporary vellum (lightly soiled) with yapp edges, page edges stained in red, manuscript title at spine in fine contemporary calligraphy. Text lightly toned. A very good set, with clean text. I. De arcano Kethib et Keri "On the Mystery of the 'Ketiv' and 'Qere'" (Tübingen, 1692). Octavo: [rev. parens]8 (-[rev. parens]8), A-Ii8 (= 263 leaves; 2C4 signed 2C7). [14], 440, [72]pp. Biblical quotations in Hebrew throughout. First edition of this detailed treatment of the ancient Jewish textual tradition which indicates that certain biblical Hebrew words are to be read differently than they are written. The Lutheran theologian and philologist Matthaeus Hiller (1646-1725) was professor of logic, metaphysics, and Oriental languages at the University of Tübingen. "He acquired great reputation by his works on philology and hermeneutics" according to McClintock & Strong. Hoefer (NBG 24, 689) seconds that assessment: "Ses travaux sur la philologie et l'herméneutique sacrée le firent connaitre aussi bien à l'étranger que dans sa patrie." Walch (4:271 - de scriptis theol. exeg.) makes the pithy observation that many have praised the work, but fewer have penetrated its depths. Among Hiller's other contributions to biblical scholarship is the Hierophyticon, a commentary on passages in the Scriptures in which flora are mentioned, published at Utrecht in 1725. Steinschneider, Bibl. HB, 888. VD17 12:127460G. Walch 4:271 (De scriptis theol. exeg.) II. Critica Sacra (Leipzig, 1688). Two parts, octavo: [pi]1 [rev. parens]7, A-2C8, 2D7, a-c8 (= 247 leaves; 2D2-7 signed 2E2-7). [16], 416, [13 index], [1 blank]; [1]-47, [1, blank]pp. Engraved frontispiece; title in red and black. Woodcut lettrines and ornaments. Some Hebrew and Greek passages. Manuductio ad accentionem V.T. with separate half-title. N.B.: This copy lacks the copperplate illustrations; it is an uncommon edition located by VD17 only in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, München. The celebrated philologist and biblical scholar August Pfeiffer (1640-1698) was professor of divinity in the University of Leipzig, and afterwards Superintendent of Lubeck. Pfeiffer's staggerinly comprehensive primer, the Critica sacra, is a notable early version of undergraduate introductions to the history, context, and textual criticism of the Old Testament (in the interest of sound exegesis, of course) exemplified in our day by such works as Eissfeldt's The Old Testament. "The philological Works of Professor Pfeiffer contain four hundred remarks on difficult passages, or what he calls Dubia vexata Scripturae. There are ten larger dissertations on difficult subjects; a treatise on hermeneutics, and one on sacred criticism, both of which are useful; a treatise on Hebrew accentuation, and one on Jewish and Mohammedan theology, and another of select Hebrew antiquities." (Orme). Four tracts (digressio) are distributed throughout the main text: beginning on p.139 "De ritibus et moribus vet. ebraeorum" includes a long bibliographical compendium "?????????? Systematis Antiquitatum Ebraicarum" (pp.141-165), divided into 8 sections (liber); the "Manuductio ad accentuationem V.T. prosaicam et metricam" contains a 2-page bibliography of works treating the biblical Hebrew accentuation system. Provenance: "Jacobi Zelleri Phil: Stu[d?]" entered in manuscript at.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Collected edition. Duodecimo. [16], 458 [i.e. 450], [14] pp. Title in red and black. Text in Latin, with passages in Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, Arabic (transliterated into Hebrew characters), and German. Original contemporary vellum with beveled edges and handwritten lettering on spin, library sticker on lower spine. Binding rubbed with minor soiling. Remnants of library sticker on inside cover, handwritten numbers and foxing offsetting onto title page. Front endpaper missing and handwritten notes on back endpaper. Very light and sporadic foxing throughout. Tight copy. Binding in overall good+, interior in very good condition. Collection of seven university dissertations presided over by August Pfeiffer. First published individually between 1662 and 1665, most of these disserations had made a prior appearance in the Fasciculus Dissertationum Philologicarum (Wittenberg, 1665). The German Lutheran theologian, orientalist, and superintendent of Lübeck, August Peiffer (1640-1698) had a stong influence on the thought of Johann Sebastian Bach. The present collection presents a forceful attack against the scriptures of Judaism and Islam. The book contains seven essays: [1] On the Talmud; [2] On the Aramaic translations of the Hebrew Scriptures; [3] on the Masora (medieval Jewish textual criticism of the Hebrew Bible); [4] on the three ancient sects of the Jews (Pharisees; Sadducees; Essenes); [5] On Jewish polemics against the Christians (drawn primarily from Talmudic sources); [6] On the Qur'an; [7]; On the Shia and Sunni sects (De Alishiis et Sunnitis), subtitled On the Main Disagreements between the Persians and the Turks Regarding Religion. These last two essays on the Islamic tradition contain four notable appendices. The first comprises a list of the 114 Suras of the Qur'an, with names transliterated into Hebrew characters and brief descriptions of their contents. The next provides selections from ten of the Suras in Latin translation. The third appendix contains a brief description of the Sahih al-Bukhari, compiled by Imam Muhammad al-Bukhari (d. 256 AH / 870 CE), widely regarded as the most important Hadith scholar in the history of Sunni Islam. Pfeiffer provides a list of the Arabic titles of the 97 books (chapters) in this collection which records the oral tradition of sayings and anecdotes attributed to the Islamic prophet Muhammad or his immediate circle. While strident in tone, the erudition displayed in these dissertations demonstrates the depth of interest on the part of early modern Christian scholars in the polemical activities of their Abrahamic brethren. "Far more important than his polemical and ascetic writings are Pfeiffer's scholarly works on exegesis, criticism, and hermeneutics of the Old Testament. His "Exercitationes biblicae," "Dubia vexata," "Introductio in orientem," "Critica sacra," "Thesaurus hermeneuticus," and "Descriptio rituum antiquorum gentis Ebreae" have been repeatedly published. A complete edition of his scholarly works was published in Utrecht in 1704" (ADB). Provenance: Old stamp of "Melanchthonhaus" at bottom margin of the dedication page. The image on a discrete old stamp at the title suggests this is The Melanchthon House in Bretten, built between the years of 1897 to 1903 on the site of the former birthplace of the reformer, Philip Melanchthon. The home of the European Melanchthon Academy since 2004, museum houses a library of 11,000 works dealing principally with the history of the Protestant Reformation.
